Just a bit about Book not recognising Inarya as a companion when introduced. Remember, Mal has just refered to her as the ambasador. Plus She is aboard her home at this point. She may have taken off a peice of clothing/jewerlery that signifies her as a companion. As for the towns folk in train job, compare Inarya's clothing to the rest of the clothing in the train/train station. They were prolly staring at thel clothes first and formost.

Well, that and the fact that she's the most beautiful woman this side of Osiris!

Loved the episode. Sooo good to get my weekly Firefly fix.

You guys got one of the podcast sites to run the Signal as a featured podcast, and on September 30 no less. Nice work!

Anyone else having a problem downloading the latest show?

I download to my computer, as I don't have an IPod. FOr some reason none of the shows will download right now. I even checked the old ones. It's 9.30 am EDT here.

I use Firefox for my browser, and I even (shudder) tried it with IE. No joy.

There does indeed seem to be a problem. We'll get on it. Thanks.

Loved this weeks installment - especially a day early. Very Happy

I was so glad to hear un update on the plans for continuing The Signal after the movie release. That makes me very happy indeed. I find myself surprised each week that the hour went by so quickly - the content is always excellent and I always learn a little something new.

I am very new to podcast listening, but following suggestions from within The Signal, I have checked out a few others now as well. But The Signal is still my favorite - and not just because of the content (although, that alone would have me listening). It's the production value that I admire. All the unique and different segments, the regular features that we have come to love, it is all just so well done. The fact that Kari and Les are in different cities across the country helps IMO because the conversation stays fluid alot more on this cast then it does when casters seem to be face to face. As the listener we miss nothing and for that a major shout to everyone who works so hard to put it all together for us.

I think my favorite part of this weeks cast was when you talked to Jeremy and Brian about the "Done the Impossible" DVD and new segment centered around the fans. I have had the documentary preordered now since the day the announcement went out on Whedonesque and can't wait for it's release in November. I especially like what you were all saying about Firefly fans, and how it seems to bond us all together. I couldnt' agree more.

I have found that the fans in this fandom are very unique and we do share a bond that I think goes deeper then the fight for our show/movie. Everytime I convert one more person - I'm giving them a gift. And they return the favor by converting a few more people. After all, they can't help themselves either.

This show especially is rare in that there are no major arguments or challenged ships or the like amongst the fans. As a longtime Buffy and Angel fan as well as others, I can tell you - the fanwank in this fandom is SOOOOOOO much better then anywhere else, it's just unbelievable. It may be that there wasn't the time for characters to be tugged and yanked about - but to tell you the truth I don't think thats even half of it. These characters we devoted ourselves to were so well envisioned from the box that I don't know one single person who has a definative favorite character OR favorite episode. It is all just so rich.

Anyway - loved that segment. I always enjoy hearing fans talk about the show and the fandom. As always the podcast as a whole was very SHINY! I look forward to next week. In more ways then one. 9 more days! Very Happy

The company that hosts the podcast files was having some problems earlier today but things are working fine now.

Thanks for your patience,

Hi.

In The Signal #11, one of the hosts (whose name I really ought to know, but don't yet--sorry) says he doesn't understand why Book, who seems so world-wise in other episodes, doesn't immediately understand about Inara being a companion.

I think I can give two reasons for this. The first is that, pragmatically speaking, from the standpoint of storytelling, Joss really wanted some character in the story to not know about Inara so that he (Joss) could more fully trick the audience into believing she was an Ambassador as well. Since, by this time the audience has already seen Inara "at work" briefly, tricking the audience now with respect to Inara's true job is a little tougher. It works better if one the characters in the story is fooled too. Having Book not get the 'ambassador" joke allows Joss an opportunity both to surprise the audience with something they were not expecting, and also to explain an important element of the Firefly universe in a more dramatic way.

But, within the context of the story and the scene itself, I think why Book was so easily fooled is that he just wasn't quite himself at that moment. Based on what Book says when he first talks to Kaylee, and based on the fresh produce he barters to help pay his way, it seems likely that he's only just left the Abbey.

When a person spends a lot of time cloistered or secluded, that first trip back into the harsh light of day in the wide world outside can be pretty jarring. Inside the Abbey, you knew everyone, and all of you had similar beliefs. Now outside the Abbey again, the Real World can take some time to fully re-aclimatize too. (Geeks that have accidently spent weeks inside in front of the computer can probably identify with this.) And, once you do go outside, sometimes important bits of info about the Real World don't all bob back into your head all at once. So even though he seemed level headed when he talked with Kaylee, this is not necessarily the case. We should never judge Book by his cover. (Ironically, this seems to be exactly what Book did when he first met Inara. Speculation: Perhaps Book has had this sort of problem in the past.)

(an attempt at something like stream-of-consciousness)
So Book's standing on this metal platform, and the captain's there, and Mal introduces this well-dressed woman to Book as Ambassador. And indeed, besides looking gorgeous, she does have the very sately bearing of an ambassador...

Just my $0.02. Please keep sending out The Signal. It is very, very cool. Very Happy

Also a note about the whole Book/Inara thing.

Book, some of us presume, has a history with the Alliance. Therefore he has spent much of his life in the core planets, and is accustomed to seeing people that well dressed and dignifiyed in all manner of jobs, not just companions. Now the people in the villiage are seen staring at Inara as if they have never seen such a beauty, and the Sheriff (who knows she is a companion) says they have never seen a companion before. Theres was a look of confusion, they havent ever seen anything like it. Based on their looks i doubt any of them knew that it was a companion or if they did it was only because they heard stories of people that beautiful before.

The comments about attire of Inara don't hold water, refer to other scenes of Simon's parents or the female Ambassador visiting Inara in "War Stories", you'll find that Companions wear things that most in the Alliance civilian populace wear. Witness the attire in "Shindig", again it's reflected.

Yeh, I know, the barn door was left open, and I'm here long after this podcast was aired, I still felt strongly enough to comment. Arrow
