Hello everyone. Firefly is fantastic...And I so want more...
Ok that said, as Keyser has already posted, we in Australia have never even had the beauty of Firefly grace our television sets...so we are on the mission to convert all by dvd stealth. That said Firefly is region 1 dvd which can pose a problem for us in Australia (we are region 4) I have explained a few times now the ways to get around this to various people but I know all the warnings (like on amazon and the like)scare a lot of my fellow Aussies off parting with their hard earned cash in case the Dvd doesnt work... So what I was wondering is this.
Can we please get something put on the main part of the site for people from other dvd regions giving them the links on the purchase of the dvd and maybe a brief run down of the various ways they can get around coding on a pc or the ways to tell if their dvd player is truly multiregion. Im not sure if this was possible but I do know that most peoples reaction is "oh I really want to watch that but how do I get it" followed by "oh I dont think my dvd player would play it"
I know Australia is only small but we have a huge Buffy/Angel following down here so it stands to reason that we could get Firefly HUGE down here as well. Heres hoping & guys dont flame me if this has already been thought of or discussed, Im new and I have only managed to read through about half of the stuff on the site so far. _________________ "Some people say the Earth is our Moon, but that would belittle the name of our Moon...which is the Moon" |

G'day! I'm an Aussie who lives in California, so I'm fortunate enough to enjoy the DVDs since they were released (and the series on TV before Fox...well, you know the story).
I remember reading somewhere that the series was being released on DVD in the UK. I guess that's a different DVD zone from Australia, but at least it would be PAL, which would be more doable than the American NTSC DVDs.
Have you contacted Fox or their reps in Australia and asked if there will be an Australian edition? Have you harangued the TV networks to show the series? I can't imagine they won't pick it up before "Serenity" is released in the theatres.
Meanwhile, you could try a Google search for multi-region DVD players, or "DVD region modification." But remember, even if you get over that hurdle, you will need a TV that can show NTSC (unless you get the UK PAL set).
Good luck! |

Heya there Duncan, Well Im lucky I have a multiregion dvd player to play my copy on. I was just trying to sort something for the lazy ones out there but its all a moot point now as I have just been told by an extremely reliable source that we are getting a local release in August which is just fantastic & brilliant. YAYAYAYAYAYAYAAY.
No excuse then for all the lazy bones out there.
Plus we have Tru Calling finally making an appearance on TV tonight. Oh today is turning out really well. _________________ "Some people say the Earth is our Moon, but that would belittle the name of our Moon...which is the Moon" |

I just saw this, the release sheet came through my work on Friday, YAY!
This might mean they give it a shot on subscription TV too!

most region 2 (UK) discs also play on region 4 (Aus/NZ) players, and vice versa, or so I'm told. |

This site has Firefly episodes to download, or get better quality ones from Bit Torrent. Remember to buy they series when it gets to Austrailia. I'm too cheap, so I rent.

Moderator Edit: In the interest of Firefly DVD sales (and thus Firefly's future), and in the interest in staying in good terms with "The Powers That Be" I have removed the link to episode downloads. Sorry about that. |

Think thats fair. Personally, I think that downloading episodes when the dvd isn't available is excusable. If the dvd is available, then buy the dvd! It'll probably work out cheeper than internet expenses, its quicker, its better quality and you get funky extras!

It was wrong on my part to post the link.
This site shows how to unlock region codes.

Hope you have better luck than I have at converting people. My parents don't understand English well. The rest of my extended family wouldn't understand a sci-fi western. I can't get my friend who is a SG-1 fan, to catch a glimpse of it. |

| Try converting based on the actors. Firefly isnt a show that is typical of a gendre (even if there is such a thing as Sci-Fi / Western). I started out trying to convert people on the show, but nine times out of 10 they'd be all "You didn't tell me Ron Glass (older people) / Nathan Fillion (younger people) was in it!" So now I start with whose in it. |

Characters would't help the people I'm converting because I'm 19. My friends would say Nathan Fillion/Ron Glass who? To be honest, I haven't heard of either actor until I saw Firefly. I did saw Nathan Fillion in Saving Private Ryan, but he was a minor character, so I didn't notice.
Edit: I saw him too in Dracula 2000, but I didn't pay attention to actors either, because it was bad movie. |

Responses to several things:
I've never understood why someone would prefer a cruddy download to a classy DVD, especially if it's an illegal download.
Re: modifying DVD players to become multiregion - I researched a bunch to modify my player and came up with nothing. I guess some are more possible than others. And please note that if you DO modify your player, you lose your manufacturer's warranty.
Re: converting people - well, I showed my parents one, and told them NOTHING about the series. They didn't know it was sci-fi or anything. They loved it. Maybe just chain your friends to a chair and tell them you have a nice surprise for them. |

The downloads are good for converting people who aren't so sure about Firefly. Tell them to download this episode and if you like it then go and out and buy it on DVD.
Plus, alot of my friends are in college so they don't have $40 to spend on a DVD set so I can still make them Browncoats and someday they will buy it plus go and see Serenity in 2005.
Also, if you tell them that buying the DVD will help it return then they will almost always buy as soon as they have money. I have done this before. _________________ Cantr II

Im another Aussie, i imported my copy a few months back for an excellent price ($50 AUD) with an added $10 postage and handling. Tee hee, its going to be released here as $60 AUD, so i definitely got it cheap considering i got it moths ago.
Firefly is being released in Australia on Wednesday 4th August

I probably buy it again because it'll be Region 4 DVD and also to boost the sales. |

That's commitment to the cause right there! I think I'll do the same. I also have started converting a whole bunch of new people,, knowing they'll be able to buy their own copies soon.
I also work in a place that sells the boxes, so I've spoken to our sales team, and let them know that it's an easy sell to any sci-fi/whedon fan.
Also, Welcome to the board! The Down Under conitngent on this board is really picking up!! _________________ Idle hands spend time at the genitals, and we all know how much God hates that...

| Im attempting to convert people but none of them seem that interested....Probably because i forced them into watching it or maybe because i told them that it is from the Joss Whedon the creator of Buffy and Angel which seemed to turn them off completely, it wasnt exactly my intention. Some people dont realise how hard it is when your the onlty one in your group who is a huge Buffy and Angel fan... |
