New show, out now. And don't forget - Les wants you to name that kitty. Smile

Hello, first post here.

I felt compelled to register and post by your latest show - most particualarly, by the new promo.
Brilliantly executed, and saying JUST what so many Browncoats want to say.

I've listened to all the eps of the Signal now, but, as I was late starting, it has taken me a while to catch up and actually be listening to the latest show soon after release.

I've enjoyed them all, and have them saved for re-listening. As a UK Browncoat, I appreciate the international flavour of the material - thank you for remembering those of us outside the USA!
The quality of the material in The Signal is astoundingly high for an amateur production, and each show has the right mix of material and segment lengths to sustain interest.

So - I want to thank you for the Signal, and my family should also thank you. Because, I put on my cordless headphones and listen while doing housework. I finish the job I am doing, but the show is still continuing, still interesting - so I look around for another job to do to occupy my hands while listening. Thus, more cleaning and tidying gets done - thanks to The Signal!

Anyway - I didn't mean to write an essay - just to thank all involved for all the episodes, and congratulate you on the new promo. The position in the Podcasting Hall of Fame is well deserved.

I vote for "Petaline" as Les's kitten's name. As Kari pointed out, a kiss-ass cat needs a kick-ass name. Where I disagree with Kari is that I think Petaline is a kick-ass name.

PETALINE: "Say goodbye to your daddy, Jonah"

We got a kitten a little over a year ago and it likes to run around the living room and it jumps from couch to couch so fast it looks like it is almost 'sideways' in the air so we nicknamed it 'Neo'! Wink

Hi guys,

I totally love your show, have been a listener from your first show.

Thanks for the Bedlam Bards interview, I had the pleasure of meeting them during the Washington Rennaisance Fantasy Fair and Cedric played some tunes for me. Awesome to hear the recorded versions, can't wait to get my hands on the cd!

Congrats to the new kitten, she sounds soooooooooooooooo cute! I love cats too but can't have one myself. Anyway, my suggestion for her name would be YoSafBridg as her character is catlike to me.

Just my 2 cents

Bea

(Sung to the chorus of "Hero of Canton")

The Signal's a podcast
that we all adore.
We listen with much anticipation
for more.
Les got him a kitten and waits for a name,
I think that it's obvious,
that kittie's named---Jaaaaayne!

River: "Jayne is a girl's name."
Jayne: "Well, Jayne ain't a girl!"

(Anyone know what the Chinese word for "cat" would be?)

If this is a double post, much apologies. I'm at work.

Flantastic. But I don't see anywhere how to get our hands on the album. Not on their website. Not in the show notes. Crying or Very sad Any news on that front - I may have missed it during the show since I listened to it at work.

And if the cat is nothing but trouble, I vote for the obvious, but totally appropriate "Saffron" or any of the variants. My main problem with Petaline is that is shortens to "Pet" which sounds too much like naming your dog "Dog."

enjoy,

The album isn't quite out yet, and their website isn't updated with the "browncoat page" yet. When it is and we get the info we'll update the show notes and mention it on The Signal.

You have to name the cat kaylee if it's a girl or jayne if it a boy. or mal(thinking about ja(y)ne could be boy or girl).

Actually, yeah :-p

The chinese word for 'cat' is

mao1

i.e. mao said in the first tone, which is high and doesn't change pitch.

Well there are many names you can choose from. Of course there are the names of all the crew but how about the following:

YoSafBridge
Bonnet (I swear by my pretty floral bonnet I will end you...)
Pax

names for the cat
* Zoe.
* Zoe. (Really. Has anyone mentioned this name yet? I see this cat, well all cats really, as being warriors or hunters, so Zoe is a natural choice.)
* Saffron / Yolanda / Bridget etc (The advantage here, is the cat will actually have a set or family of names rather than just one specific one)
* Female Reaver #2 (I made this name up. It fits with the warrior thing, well sort of.)

non-Serenity-Firefly names for the cat
* Miss Kitty Fantastico a la Tara and Willow's kitty in BtVS
* Kuroneko-sama a la the re-occuring mystery cat in Trigun
* Frankenstein a la Lister's cat in Red Dwarf
* Spot a la Data's cat in Star Trek: Next Gen

props for the episode
This episode was so cool. I like the interlacing of the interview and all the other bits. I also really, really liked the promo for The Signal season 2. You guys are beginning to get frighteningly good. Smile EDIT: Of course this make it seem as if I'm saying that you weren't good before, which is not the case. You guys have been incredibly, really good for a long time. You just keep getting better and better.

Cool Cool

Now what we really need is for other podcasts to play it. So far it's been played on SciFiDig, the Week in Whedon, and Treks in SciFi. Mike (of Mike and Evo fame) says it will be played on one of their shows next week. This is a good start, but we need more. So, people, if you listen to any podcasts other than the Signal, let's find a way of getting the Signal-Season-2 promo played on it.

Ah! Thanks!
Makes since.
Actually, if I'm not mistaken, that's the name the Egyptians gave cats as well.
Whatever the cat is named, I think the word "mao" should be a middle name.
For example:
Jayne Mao Howard
Zoe Mao Howard
Pet(aline) Mao Howard

I like Petaline. It sounds a bit feline and I'm always a fan of the subtle choice. Never use anything as obvious as Kaylee or Zoe. Especially not Zoe because it's really hard to figure out how to put that proper accent over the "e" when typing. I mean, does anyone know off the top of their head how to get that to show up?

BTW, first post for me!

The following was originally sent as an e-mail, but I feel compelled to share with everyone. Enjoy!

****
Petaline is a fine name, and as someone has already pointed out on the forum, it is indeed the name of an ass-kicker. But have you considered a name that will mesh better with the more, shall we say, feline aspects of her personality?

Reaver. This cat's name is Reaver. Notice the one black ear and the one orange ear. Notice the flash of orange above the right eye blending into the the streak down the right half of the bridge of the nose. Notice also the Attitude visible in the eyes. The "How dare you interrupt me when I'm about to scratch be hind my ear" look she's giving the wielder of the camera. And those claws - very sharp. I bet the teeth are fearsome, too. Yes, this little bundle of feline atrociousness is Reaver.

Of course, I may be heavily biased. I play roller derby under the name The Gorram Reaver (#03-K64).

-Reaver, #03-K64

I just got an update from the Bedlam Bards. The Browncoat section of their website is now online. It includes background info about the album, cover art (by Oklahoma BedHead Josh Horner), links to our MP3-postcards, links to the short clips that were used on the Podcast, links to the lyrics, and even a karaoke version of "Hero of Canton." You can find all this and more at:

http://www.bedlambards.com/Browncoats.html

Cedric also asked me to to mention that the current news on the album is that it will be available mid-January. Too late for a Christmas gift, but well worth the wait.

I agree with Kari that this looks like one "kick butt little kitty". That would make Zoe a good name in theory but I don't think the name fits.
Have you considered Shiung-tsan sha-sho or some shortening of this awesome chinese phrase I learned from your podcast, meaning of course, ass kicking killer. Maybe just Sha-sho. Sounds like a cute soft kitty name but with bite Wink
Well thats my vote.
Keep up the great podcast!

- Aargh, curse your sudden but inevitable betrayal!

- HAHAHA! Mine is an evil meow! Now give me a name!!

- Aaaahhaaaa! Ohh, dear God in heaven!! Angry kitty bearing right down on us!

I'd be very happy to play the promo on Firefly Talk, if you'd like! Some users have mentioned that we're the only podcast they've listened to, so I know that at least some of them might not yet know about the Signal.

I know at least a few of them found our podcast by surfing frappr and finding our nice frappr map, so I don't share the "frappr being a burden" position. It's helped expand our numbers, at least a little bit, and people seem to really enjoy putting their encouraging words and favorite quotes on there. I think it can be a fun and useful community building thing. But that's just my two cents.

Of course, for some people you're absolutely right. But then there's people like me who listen to Firefly Talk, SciFiDig, Dragon Page, Skepticality, Treks in Sci-Fi, Geek Fu Action Grip ... oh the list goes on! And every single one of them wants me to put a pin in their frappr map. It's just too gorram much. And at this stage, it's now a bandwagon. I never was one for jumping on those things.

For community building, we have this forum. For stats (including geographical location) we have the supergeek powers of Les. I think we've got all bases covered there.

You are more than welcome to play our promo. I was going to wait until Firefly Talk's promo was ready before asking, then we could swap, but hey, you won't catch me complaining!

Yes I can see that being a not-fun thing, I hadn't really considered that; when I set up our map there were almost no other podcasts doing so. I'll make sure to keep stressing that it's only for people to do it as a fun thing, if it sounds appealing to them--it was never about getting geographical statistics, it's all about them having fun and having another way to feel involved.

We may have a promo ready by the time we play yours (sometime this month), so the swapping thing might work well. But I was going to play your promo either way, as a thanks to including that segment that you did in the most recent show.

note to The Signal people/person regarding frappr map(s): I have a (in my not so humble opinion) marvelous idea: In the next episode of The Signal, for any fans wanting a The Signal frappr map, just direct them over to the Firefly Talk frappr map. Explain (or re-explain) to them that the primary goal of The Signal is to drum up support for all things Firefly & Serenity and that the Firefly Talk podcast (and frappr map) are for--you know--everything else.

I suppose there is a possibility that by the time you read this, it has already been done. But if it hasn't, then I think it'd be a good idea. Just my ($200 / 10000).

Personally my understanding is that it being there doesn't mean you have to do it Smile its just a fun way to see where everyone lives. Since none of the listeners have access to the information like Les gives to us its a neat way to see how far spreading the voice of the verse carries!

Just like voting.. its optional Very Happy

Feel free to ignore it!!

Smile Your shiny friend in KY! (just so those of you know don't know me don't have to go see my pin on the map!)

Loved the latest podcast and that is one cute kitty! I don't think she looks like a Petaline though because that is a pretty name that befits a gentle cat. While I don't know that Reaver is quite right - I think that is certainly heading in the right direction!
