Back in August, I was inspired by what einaphets on Skiffy (SciFi.com) posted about getting a copy of the BDCE (Big Damn Collector's Edition), for her hubby's fire station.

"Firefly for Firefighters" is the idea which has grown from that small gesture.

Every community, in the US and pretty much anywhere else I can think of, has at least one fire station, most of them manned 24 hours. The firefighters there are real life Big Damn Heroes, but, aside from the occasional tragic occurrence, don't get much recognition for looking out for every one of us, all the time. As such, they spend a lot of time waiting for trouble to arise, and, between station-house duties and calls, have a good amount of time on their hands.

Firefighters deserve the chance to become Browncoats. Likely, many already are, but, many more are not.

That's where "Firefly for Firefighters" comes in.

Local Browncoat groups can get together, pitch in to buy sets of the Firefly and BDCE (or, if not available, Serenity) DVDs, and, make a gift of them to their local staffed fire stations. Together, the DVDs cost less than $50.00US, so, a group of ten Browncoats would only have to contribute about $5 individually, per fire station.

I originally proposed that, in the month of September, we all do our best to get these two DVDs into the hands of as many firefighters as possible. Well, since then, a number of Browncoat groups have extended the initiative through the upcoming holiday season. That makes for a much longer window of opportunity to get the Signal out to the firefighters. Happy Thanksgivowe'en!

Locate all the fire stations in your community, figure out your budget for sufficient DVDs, then, call the stations to let them know that your group wants to come visit and make a gift to the station DVD library. Arrange a time at the convenience of the station Chief or other responsible party, to be sure you don't interrupt some important activity.

When you do make your visit, it would be a great opportunity to establish ties with the firefighters, there. Many stations are involved in other charitable causes, and, might welcome the assistance of our enthusiastic numbers, when they do their own fundraisers or fire safety awareness events. It wouldn't hurt, at all, to offer that assistance, especially if you have an organized group in need of a purpose.

Be sure, assuming it's alright with the firefighters, to get some pictures, when you visit. Please, post 'em here, let us see your local BDHs!

This is not only a great thing to do for the firefighters, but, it also gets the signal out. You know what happens when folks watch Firefly. A good many flamin' Browncoats could arise from this, and, we'd make 'em very welcome!

Come on, Browncoats! We are many, and, these folks are everywhere! Won't cost more'n a couple bucks, each, for most of us with friends, and, the benefits will be lasting.

Love is what keeps her in the air... All our love.

Last Saturday, the 27th, a contingent of the Greenville Browncoats, consisting of Green-Eyed Laura, Evil Mandy (it dun mean what you might think!), Rhiotre, and, yours, truly, met up at The Command Post, a local gaming store (owned by another member of the Greenville Browncoats), to prepare for a day out among the local firefighters. We chatted and watched Firefly on the big-screen TV, there, while waiting for any stragglers. When none appeared, we set out.

We had among us five sets each of the Firefly Series and Serenity Collector's Edition DVDs, as well as goodies for munching. Each bag included Fruity Oaty bars (or, the moral equivalent), popcorn, snack crackers, and, either Pumpkin Treats or Fall Brownies.

Our first stop was the Eastside Fire Station.

The crew there invited us inside, and, we chatted for most of 20 minutes, before proceeding on our way.

We then stopped at the Stone Avenue Station.

A lone firefighter greeted us and accepted our package.

Our next stop, after slight navigational difficulties, was Parker District Station 2.

The crew there gave us directions to the next station...

Which was Parker District Station 4.

Another, lone firefighter met us and accepted our package.

Finally, we made our way (sans Evil Mandy, whom we dropped off back at the Command Post) to our last stop of the day, the Fountain Inn Fire Department.

The firefighters there also invited us in for a brief chat.

The Greenville Browncoats plan another jaunt in November. Plenty enough local fire stations unvisited, as yet!

I hope this inspires other Browncoats to go out and share the shiny with our first-responders! If you do, please, report it, here, and, post any pics, so we can all see where you went, and, who you met.

Make it a shiny day!

Last Saturday, the 8th, a contingent of the Greenville Browncoats, consisting of Linda (the creator of my FfF sig), Evil Mandy (it dun mean what you might think!), Rhiotre, john, and, yours, truly, met up at The Command Post, a local gaming store (owned by another member of the Greenville Browncoats), to prepare for yet another day out among the local firefighters.

We bore five sets of the usual swag: One set each of the Firefly and BDCE DVDs, Fruity Oaty bars (local brand), fancy holiday cakes (like Kaylee's "Shindig" dress), popcorn, miniature Snicker's bars, and, some more exotic goodies Linda brought, which, as I can't remember how to spell, I won't embarrass myself in the tryin'.

We stopped first at Wade Hampton FD, Station 3:

Where we marshalled our forces in the parking lot:

We approached the festively-decorated door for our first drop:

And, were greeted by the station crew:

Our next stop was the Boiling Springs FD Station 2:

The crew wouldn't let us leave without a station tour; we got to see all the very shiny fire trucks, including a new rescue unit that would make a heckuva RV:

We moved along to the Boiling Springs FD Station 1:

Not to be outdone, the crew, there, showed us their vehicles, along with all the awesome rescue equipment, including the fabled "Jaws of Life!"

Our fourth stop was the Boiling Springs FD Station 3:

Where the crew received us warmly, as well:

Our last stop was Greenville FD Station 3:

Where, once again, the friendly crew received a bag of Browncoat holiday cheer:

According to Linda, there are other Browncoat groups going unsung, in Tennessee and North Carolina, while I am aware of efforts in Utah and Texas, as well, to brighten the firefighters day with similar visits.

If anybody cares to participate, it looks like this is going to be a near-perennial effort, at least, until most or all stations are covered, so, don't feel you have to stop on January 1, 2008! And, if you do make drops to your local BDHs, please, post a short report here, even if you don't leave pictures.

Happy holidays, especially to our first-responders! Thanks for being our guardian angels, year-round, but, especially at this time of year!
