Ok this ones a scheme courtesy of Cordrone over on the UNI HD boards... So as to not bandy about with words I will just use Cordrone’s...

Check it out. Post there too to help drive the effort. If we can have NBC pick up the show and use it as a replacement during the strike that may just be the thing we need to get our gorram sequel! (Providing it does well which I'm sure it will with the rest of the festuring pooh that will be on the tube.)
Dig it! Share it! Post it! Spread the Signal! This fight is far from over so long as Joss and the Crew want to do it (and clearly the antics of Alan and Nathan, as well as the words of Joss, prove they do want to do it) then the 'Verse ain't even close to bein' through. |

| Just put a post on the NBC forums. Although I do not think it will happen seeing as how sci-fi has the rights to air the reruns, but hell I will do anything to generate interest. |

| Actually Universal and NBC, which includes the Sci-fi channel, are part of the same company and recently Universal has been showing Firefly on it's HD channel, so really we're just asking that they move it to another channel if they don't want to rerun it on Uni HD. |

I wouldn't be so sure about that the Sci-Fi channel is also a part of the NBC/Universal family.
While I greatly appreciate Firefly's runs on Sci-Fi and the Universal HD channels both have a very limited audience. I think a run in Prime time on a real network station that most people still watch can be a VERY successful venture for NBC and Universal.
Firefly was originally created as a prime time show so it has all the hallmarks and quality of one: Excellent script writing, acting, directing, special effects and the like. Thus putting it back where it belongs in prime time is not a stretch at all. Combine that with the fact there is a large Browncoat fan base (ie. ready made viewers who will sit down and watch the show even though we have the DVD's) and the fact that it still has an air of total freshness to it as the general public never really had a chance to view it because of the way it was FUX up by FOX. Also, throw is the fact that though people may have not seen Firefly, they may have been exposed to Serenity (could just be a commercial for the movie or they may have seen it on HBO and not known there was a TV show about it ever) and actors like Nathan (Waitress and Desperate House Wives), Adam (Chuck), and Alan (3:10 to Uma and Knocked Up) have more exposure, fan recognition, and drawing power than they ever did.
I've tried to look for downsides, to play Devil's advocate (because it's a wise thing to do IMO), but the more ways I look at it, the more I see that there is a very good likelihood of this idea being a success. (The only real sticking point is IF they have the rights. Which if Universal HD and Sci-Fi have them I would imagine they do.)
That's how I see it right now. If the strike goes on there is going to be a void in entertainment and I think that Firefly could fill that void better than any other rerun or reality TV show. Plus it would give NBC/Universal even greater exposure for one of there already existing products thus boosting it's potential to generate more much needed revenue. _________________ We gotta go to the crappy town where I'm a hero!

Yeah!
How do we go about getting Firefly on the BBC? Serenity was hugely popular in the UK, if I recall. Maybe everyone in the UK should write to the Radio Times saying "Hey - you got Heroes - now how about Firefly!?"

That's a right fine idea too Kate!
Also, even if the strike ends before it can be shown, or even if it can't be shown for legal reasons or whatever else, it's still a good way to make some noise and keep the 'Verse a hot topic and in the minds of the folks at Universal.
Let's keep the signal pumpin' and expand the 'Verse! _________________ We gotta go to the crappy town where I'm a hero!

T'is indeed a shiny idea... but I would perhaps suggest trying for the other networks... I think the BBC used most of their budget getting Heros... maybe channel 4 or something, because it's not like they have Lost anymore... |

I don't watch Channel 4. It has commercials.
But I can't argue that Firefly on Channel 4 would be better than no Firefly at all. Hell, let's just write to both of the terrestrial networks and see who wins. _________________

They do that from time to time. But I believe the purpose of this thread was to think about getting it onto more mainstream channels. Here in the UK, the (UK) sci-fi channel is (a) not universally available, and (b) mostly full of crap. I can't speak for the USA but I rather think the push to get Firefly on NBC tells me the (US) sci-fi channel must be a similar story. _________________

Yeah, I thought of that too, when they launched Heroes back in July. Radio Times published the results of a survey (one of those mysterious surveys magazines conduct over their web sites, which nobody ever hears about until the results come out) in which a whole 3000 votes were cast for "The top 20 unreal shows ever (not including Doctor Who)". Firefly was not among them* -- which I guess reflects its low profile in the UK. Sending a copy of the BDS to the guys who wrote the article (John Naughton and William Gallagher) might be an appropriate response -- or a bunch of wavecards. (Or to "Sue Deeks, BBC Programme Acquisitions' head of series, who bought Heroes, ...".)

Not the point! You can watch your DVDs anytime you like. The point is that Channel 4 has a large audience of FF/S virgins. Their audience figures are in the same ball park as BBC2's (where Heroes and Buffy is/was shown): 6-7% each of total viewing audience.
* PS For the geeks who like to know these things, the RT survey put Red Dwarf as no. 1, then X-files, Lost, Life on Mars, BtVS, ST:TNG, SG-1, Star Trek (original), H2G2, Quantum Leap, Heroes, Blakes 7, Twin Peaks, V, Torchwood, Babylon 5, The Prisoner, BSG (current version), Thunderbirds, and Lost in Space. Some odd choices but mostly good ones -- with one big omission (well, two, counting Angel)! _________________ Hell, I've been to the edge. |
