This is the forum thread where those of us who are interested can together turn Steven Brust's Firefly novel " My Kind of Freedom" into an audio book, and then into a podcast.

Anyone interested in taking part - either by reading and recording a chapter, or by editing a chapter (and there are 17 chapters, by the way) should join this thread, and together co-ordinate who's doing what.

There is no barrier to participation. You don't have to be vetted or approved. All you have to do is post on this thread. It's that simple.

Excellent. We already had a few emails about this following the review and hopefully those folk will be joining this discussion shortly.

The more the merrier. Tell your friends! 17 chapters and possibly 17 editors mean a lot of people can get involved.

Ooh - flexibility. I like that. Well then, I guess we'll wait and see which jobs get filled by other folk.

I'll volunteer to edit one chapter.

Yah, I'm up to read a chapter, if'n they ain't too many characters to voice

Hey, this is great! Welcome aboard. The more the merrier. Doing voices might be a bad thing though, because there won't be continuity from chapter to chapter. If you do a voice for Mal in Ch 5, and then someone does a different voice for Mal in Ch 6, it won't be clear from the voice alone that it's that same character (although of course it does help that we're all familiar with Nathan Fillion's portrayal of Mal). I dunno, but I think that given the way we're doing this, a straight read might work better than everyone trying to do voices. What do the rest of you think?

A female what? (You have a quaint way with words Smile). Anyway - anyone who wants to join in needs to post on this thread and introduce themselves. That's what this thread is for.

Just Google Audacity

Generally speaking, MP3 is only used for file transfer; for actual editing, you would use WAV.

You don't need to audition. If you're on this thread then you've got the job.

What we're waiting for is enough people. When 17 voice artists and 17 editors are on this thread, then we just go for it. Until then, we have to wait, because without enough people, it won't happen.

I do have one female friend that is willing to be the voice of River and Kaylee for the readings

I guess this is open to discussion, but I understood we were making an audio book, not an audio drama. If it turns out we're making an audio drama then I must withdraw my offer to edit, because I simply don't have the time. The original plan was one voice per chapter - not one voice per character. That means, if the text of the novel says
Quote:
Mal said "Yes".
River said "No"

then whoever reads the chapter is expected to say "Mal said yes. River said no", without trying to impersonate either character. Just like in "Tales from the Verse", except that it's a novel, not a short story. If that plan has changed, then it should be discussed.

Also, if your friends are willing to voice a whole chapter, including all voices and narration, then that's great! If so, please would you ask them to post on this forum and tell us that themselves. It would be so much nicer to be able to talk with them rather than having you relay messages.

My wife Heather and I would be willing to read a chapter each. She is Australian with a nice Melbournian accent and I am American with a lightly southern (Maryland) twang to it.

We both have excellent diction skills and you can hear our voices on the Fan Commentary (in the general Thread) I posted there.

I have Audacity and can do a rough edit if needed but someone with more professional tools can go through and do a final edit.

By my count that's now ten jobs volunteered for. (Some people volunteered for two jobs, so I counted them twice). That's out of 34, so we're about of the third of the way there, and we still need 24 more. That's pretty good when you consider we've only been recruiting for a week!

Just as an added incentive, when we reach halfway there (17 jobs volunteered for), I shall email Steven Brust himself and see if he'd be willing to record an introduction or something for us.

When we reach 2/3 of the way there (22 jobs volunteered for) then I reckon that would be a good time to start dishing out the chapters and recording, because by then we'll be fairly certain the project is go.

Do you think he'd be up for recording the first chapter? I thought he had quite a good voice from the interview and having the author read the first chapter would be really shiny. An intro too of course would be nice Smile

If I didn't actually say it before, both Joy and I are also up for reading a chapter each.

I think that we need to be clear that this would be (at least for this project) an audio book project as Jill has already made clear. The work involved in transforming a Firefly novel into a full audio drama is HUGE (I'll let Jill elaborate if she wishes, but trust me on this Smile and by far the most time consuming thing would be the editing. (I reckon on about 1 hour editing time per minute of fully mixed and edited audio drama. And that's without sourcing sound FX, music, etc)

Don't get me wrong, it would be a great project, but if you did it to the standard of say, Old Wounds, you'd probably be talking a couple of years work in all start to finish, depending on how much time "you and a fairly big crew" could put in.

As it is, from doing some book reading elsewhere, each chapter is likely to take half an hour to an hour to read (depending on length) so we're already talking a substantial (but very acheivable) undertaking. Exciting isn't it! Smile

I haven't asked and I wouldn't like to speculate, so let's assume not. I'd rather be pleasantly surprised than unpleasantly surprised. As I said, I'll email him when our volunteer numbers reach the 50% mark, but not before, because we need to be able to offer a reasonable guarantee that the project will actually happen.

That said, it's looking good. The way things are going, I'll be sending that email within days. (And I think I'd rather that the author read the last chapter! Smile)

That reminds me. There might be a place for bit-parts and VIP guests. I'm thinking chapter three. You see, chapter three is special, because, uniquely, it is composed of many different, independent, flashback scenes. It makes sense that each scene could be read by a different person. (Three is the only chapter for which this is true). So, if we were at all thinking of getting some VIP guests on board, who might not be willing to read a whole chapter, then the flashback scenes in chapter three would be a good getout.

Or that. Smile

Just idle speculation, but if we get this really up and running (as I think is quite likely), he may even offer. We can hope.

There is also Richard Hull and Mark Smith who emailed, but haven't appeared here yet I think (may be having forum issues)

I'll take the time to read the entire novel to get a feel for it.

And I've started listening to "Tales From the 'Verse". Also finished "Failed Cities". I think that I have the idea that you eluded to.

Excellent idea! A link to said novel here would be a boon for those of us that have yet to download a copy.

Hello all.

I am newly joined, newly connected and LONG time interested...

I would like to offer to assist with this Audiobook Project. I am/have been an actor, including Radio Plays, and have done sound editing BUT that was tape & razor.

I am a relatively quick study (semi-pro Geek) with technology and have already read a 1/3 of the Book.

I am somewhat driven to this project partly because Steven Brust was a friend of a late friend of mine.

Please let me know if I can fit in here.

Thanks for holding 'til i got here....

If you're on this thread, then you're in.

We're still four people short of the halfway mark, so I think a second mention on the Signal wouldn't go amiss.

So now, a question for everyone on this thread. What shall be the "point of no return"? In other words, at what point should we say "We don't have all the people we need yet, but we're fairly confident we can get there, so let's start recording"? Should it be 10 voice artists and 10 editors? If we have fewer, do we gamble and hope? It would be silly to go ahead with too few volunteers, because that would mean either the project would fail, or we'd all be burdened with more work than we'd signed up for, and I for one don't like either possibility. On the other hand, if we wait too long, people might lose interest, and maybe once we get started that momentum will draw other people in. It's a tough decision, but we're all in this together, so let's make that decision together. Pick a number. Define our point of no return.
