Browsing an old SF anthology, as one does, I chanced upon the short story "Pilgrimage to Earth" by Robert Sheckley, first published in 1956. A rube travels to Earth to find true love, and a company there promises to sell it to him. Agreeing, he is introduced to a woman, they fall madly in love and have a wonderful time together. But 24 hours later she disappears, so he goes back to the company to complain. They explain that she had been carefully selected as someone he would immediately like, and was then hypnotised to fall for him and only him. However, today her memories and preferences have been erased and replaced with new ones, and by now she is madly in love with the company's next client. She volunteered to take this work and is well paid for it. He experienced true love, so his contract with the company was fulfilled.
