The latest issue of dreamwatch has a feature article from the Serenity set, complete with interviews with Joss Whedon and the producers. The issue is available now in the UK and from 16 August in the US.
Here is an exclusive Serenitymovie.net extract from the article:
Firefly Burning Bright
After only 12 episodes of Firefly had aired (three more were completed and are now available with the others in the DVD set), Fox pulled the plug. “It was a horror show,” Whedon acknowledges. “I was overconfident. It was a wake-up call. I got to make Buffy and Angel because I was flying under the radar. [When Buffy started] I was working on a fledgling network that had no identity and let me do whatever I wanted. Once I was actually on radar, they didn’t do that any more. I think what I did had great merit, but it wasn’t what they wanted. But it’s a business and you move one.”
“When the show was pulled, it was right before Christmas 2002, I believe,” explains Chris Buchanan, one of Serenity’s executive producers and, during Firefly, president of Whedon’s Mutant Enemy Productions. “We immediately circled the wagons: Joss and I and his agent and his lawyer started exploring the different ways that we might be able to keep telling the story. The first conversation we really had were, ‘Was there another network available that needed good product and could handle the budget?’ The cost of the show was prohibitive for most cable outlets. We started exploring the movie options. Our good fortune arrived in the form of Mary Parent, who’s the co-chair of Universal. She said to Joss, ‘We’d love to be in business with you – what do you want to do? And Joss said, ‘I want to do a Firefly movie.’ I think to most executives that would have been like, ‘Oh, that’s nice…’ But she was really into Joss and she sat down and watched every episode of the show. So did [Universal executive] Stacey Snider. They said, ‘Okay – this is a great story. If we can make it with reasonable parameters, let’s do it.’”
Why did Whedon fight so hard to get Serenity made? “I’ve never been in the situation where I felt I had a story to tell that was there to be told… We’d gone so far with it and then we’d just been cut off. I just wasn’t ready to let go of it. It’s also guilt, because I was like, ‘This show’s so good, it’ll run forever! You should all buy new houses and new cars!’ I meant to say, ‘New hats!’ I felt I’d been a little arrogant in just assuming this would work. I felt like I owed it to [the cast] to do everything I could to make good on the promise that I was perhaps a little pig-headed in making.”
Will the Serenity universe continue beyond the film? “I want to make the movie good enough that it deserves to have others made. That is my only goal,” Whedon states. “Even if we never make another one, if I succeed with this one, then I’m fine.”

Wait a minute . . . there's a Buffy magazine? And an Angel magazine? I think I'm becoming seriously frightened. _________________ --------------------------------

Should be available on shelves in the U.S. on August 16. Borders and Barnes & Noble should have it. _________________ Keep Flyin!

Yeah, why? I actually still pick up the Angel magazine, now and then. But I'm not as obsessive over it as I was the Babylon 5 magazine.
I think the Buffy mag may well run for another dozen years. Any tv show that can spawn a series of academic conferences deserves those props. _________________ Slice of SciFi / The Dragon Page

Ummm . . . the shows were cancelled.
Don't get me wrong. It was a good show. Because of Firefly I checked them out to see what else Joss was up to.
But to have mags over cancelled shows seems a bit much. That seems a bit to the geeky side of two standard deviations from the norm. _________________ --------------------------------

Correct me if I'm wrong, but Buffy wasn't cancelled, was it? Angel I think was but they were losing steam anyway. In the Buffy case, I think it reached it's logical end and the stars were ready to move on, as was Joss. I haven't seen the last season of Angel yet, but I would expect much the same thing happened there. _________________ Listen to "The Signal"

Perhaps I'm just an amateur, but I thought the last season of Angel was by far the best of the five. They seemed to finally be able to poke fun at themselves while still telling spell-binding stories. I'm actually surprised it was cancelled after that season.
And yes, Buffy was cancelled. You can tell because there aren't any new ones being made. "Cancel" means, among other things, to "call off usually without expectation of conducting or performing at a later time." What you've said was that it was cancelled by Joss and the stars, rather than the network.
And that's kind of my point. If the shows were cancelled, why have magazines about them? If they're going to be starting up again, then maybe, but otherwise, move on.
So why am I here, you might ask? Because there's going to be a movie. The main reason I stopped by the forum in the first place was because there's going to be a movie, and I wanted to learn more about it. Had there been no movie, I would probably have never showed up here.
Don't get me wrong--I'm glad I did. This place has some of the best people on-line I've ever had the pleasure of coming in contact with, including yourself . Working on the podcast has been enjoyable, albeit time-consuming, but then, there's a movie coming out.
If more movies are planned, I'll keeping hanging around. If a series starts up again, I'll probably continue to hang around. Heck, I might even break my TV vow and watch it rather than wait for the DVDs. But I doubt I'd read a magazine about it.
I'm coming off more and more like a grouch. I think I'd better quit while I'm behind. _________________ --------------------------------

Ha ha!!
OK...I just didn't consider Buffy "cancelled" because in my mind that word in television land is defined as "ended before it's time by the gorram network". When it's the choice of the stars/director/creator, I don't consider it a cancellation...more of a natural death. I don't know what the case with Angel was since I'd fallen out of the habit of watching it. And I've heard that season 5 was the best...I'm slowly working my way through the DVDs, but I'm only on Season 2.
Oh...and I don't read the magazines either...this is the first I'd heard of them too. _________________ Listen to "The Signal"
