Good grief. I can see it now. It's the year 2023 and in the first episode of season 2 of Firefly we find out that Jayne has named his zimmer frame Monica. An episode could be based around his adventures in picking up his pension cheque.

I don't frequent the official forum. I only frequent this one. Please don't hold it against me (or the rest of the Signal crew) that we're not omnipresent, and don't know everything. |
Why not? That really isn't good enough.....
Seriously though, The Signal is a cool show and I appreciate the time and effort that everyone must put into making it. It's the first podcast I have ever listened to, and I love it.
Apologies for the snippiness of my earlier message. I really wasn't as annoyed as I sounded in it. Things like this generally don't bother me at all. Think I'm just having a bad day!
I'm sure the rumour will keep coming up. Having thought about it some more, I'm not even sure whether it makes any difference to the chances of the show returning. I understand that Fox still hold the rights, so ten year deal or not, someone will need to pay them to get the rights.

Kate,
I found the clip I was talking about. It is actually the first question posed to Joss at WonderCon 2005 (Joss, Adam, Summer and Nathan formed the Firefly/Serenity panel).
I will try to do a transcript. The sound isn't fantastic quality though but I'll get as close as I can:
Guy asking question: 'I have seen an online rumour, whereby you are not allowed to make more Firefly episodes because of the movie. Can you confirm or deny?'
Joss: 'I haven't heard that rumour but I don't have time to make Firefly episodes. What would contractually happen afterwards is up in the air, but certainly nobody has come out and said you must never make another episode. But right now nobody is thinking about it either. It's just a rumour.
Nathan: (sticks hand in air) I think I actually spread that rumour.
Joss then makes a joke but I can't quite make out what it is.
Always thought before now that Nathan said he started it rather than spread it.
Anyway, there you go. Not sure where the ten year thing first started but it seems like there isn't anything contract-wise to stop more episodes being made.
I have heard though that Joss does not want to work with Fox again, which is understandable considering what they did to his best work. I don't know if that info is completely correct as I can't remember where it came from, but given the interference by the network I can certainly believe it. It seems as if the only chance of future Firefly episodes is if someone buys the TV rights from Fox. If the movie does well I guess there may be some interest, but then Fox probably won't let the TV rights go cheaply.
Personally I don't think we will ever see more episodes. I'd give anything to be proven wrong though!
Thanks for a great podcast and keep up the good work!

But listen folks, this conversation seems to consist of a fair few people saying "please make more Signal", and us saying "we'll do what we can". What I want to hear, though, is people saying "I can do XYZ". That would help. The more people there are that can do XYZ, the more chance there is that Firefly/Serenity podcasting will keep going enough to keep us all happy. |
I definitly think The Signal should continue in some form - probably less often to allow you guys some free time!
As for ideas - how about persuading castmembers to record new commentaries for the FF eps, particularly those without existing ones. E.G. Adam on "Jaynestown" woul be shiny. You could get the subject to listen on headphones (or use subtitles) while watching the DVD so the original soundtrack does not get onto commentary recording (thus avoiding copyright issues). These could then be released as mp3s for listeners to sychnronise with their own DVDs. Two-handed commentaries tend to be better (more banter), but that would be more difficult to arrange (unless it was 1 fan + 1 cast).
My background is physics, so I could have done Science of Firefly, but you've got that covered.
I could also submit a review of Starcops, which was a BBC hard SF series with silent space, no aliens, and was cancelled after one series.

| I would love to see the show continue beyond October. I look forward to seeing Itunes downloading the new ones. I don't care if it's every other week, or once a month, I'd just love to see more. |

The video is actually about 129MB as it contains the whole panel. Can't remember which format it is in. I will see what I can do about ripping the sound as an MP3 and cutting out the relevant section, but I'll need to figure out how to do it first. Hopefully I'll get a chance to work on it tonight.

Hey, if you succeed in ripping the sound as an MP3, send us the whole damn lot! We love having new sources of material.
...or... if the video has a URL, give us that, and we can find it ourselves.
Anyway, Jeremy will certainly be able to help with extracting audio from video. He's, like, "the man" when it comes to that sort of thing. _________________

The video is here:
http://www.fireflyfans.net/feature.asp?f=63
Let me know if you still want me to extract the MP3 from the file. I'm sure a quick Google search will produce instructions on how to do it, so it won't be a hassle. The mp3 for the whole video may be a bit large for me to email, but I could certainly send the part regarding the possibility of more episodes.
I always find these con videos well worth watching anyway, as whatever cast turn up, they are always funny. Nathan, as usual, steals the show on this one.
Watch out for a point near the end of the panel where Nathan receives a call on his mobile. Hi-larious!

No need. I can do that. Thanks very much. We'll have that extract in the next show. _________________

Further to my previous post on Starcops, I could submit a 3-part series of essays comparing and contrasting Firefly and classic British SF series:
1. "Star Cops" - Britain's Firefly?
Abstact
A unique hard SF show, with witty writing, silent space-scenes, no aliens and (some) great acting is put in a graveyard slot and is cancelled after one short series. Ring any bells? Well, this isn't Firefly, it's the BBC's "Star Cops", which lasted 9 episodes in the summer of 1987 on BBC2.
2. "Blakes 7" and "Firefly", Bothers in arms?
Abstract:
Will compare & contrast the two series. Joss may well have seen Blakes 7 when attending school in the UK, and there are certainly stiking similarities between the 2 shows.
3. Resurection and Regeneration, the fall and rise of "Firefly" and "Dr Who".
Abstract: Will compare & contrast the paths Joss Whedon and Russel T. Davies took in bringing back the two cancelled TV shows.
I'm away for 2 weeks (actually in the US) so this would have to be for post Serenity Signals.

We don't actually accept submissions from outside the crew unless we commission them. We write our own. Writing talent is not something we are short of.
I keep trying to encourage people to start new podcasts. There is clearly plenty of talent out there. _________________

OK.
Les seemed to making a general appeal for submissions in his post above. So exactly what help are you looking for (especially in the post-movie time-frame)?
Is anyone else is starting a podcast, are you interested in my suggestion(I haven't got equipment or talent to do it myself)? |

We're not looking for help with the Signal. We're trying to encourage other people to make new podcasts.
Try to look at it like this. Imagine you have a favorite rock band, but they only make one album a year. So you say to them, "Why don't you make more albums? I want one a month". They say "We can't. It's just too much work". You say: "What help do you need? I can play guitar. I've got a friend who can play the drums, and my mate at work can write lyrics". Do you see the analogy? If you bring all those people on board, it won't be the same band.
We can only work so hard. Obviously other people can do stuff too - that goes without saying. So, to continue the analogy, why not get those people together and form your own band? We will help. And we will continue the Signal, albeit at a slower pace. _________________

I just sent another email with an idea for a topic if/when you have a Jewel Staite interview.

Hi guys. I love the Signal, but I think I've only listened to an entire episode the whole way through a couple of times. I tend to listen to podcasts during my commute.
You were talking about options for when this season of the Signal is over, and possibly going to a once-a-month format. That sounds fine to me. Although I'd be even happier to have a thirty-minute podcast every two weeks, or fifteen minutes per week.
Whether you change the format or take a break altogether, I'm really glad you have put so much time and love into the Signal. I'd never listened to a podcast before a friend turned me on to yours, and I'm so glad they did.
Thanks for all your hard work. |
