Here's a thought as I was walking home listening to the latest broadcast of The Signal. I was thinking how the podcast is like radio used to be, and what used to be really big on radio?
Radio dramas!
And I thought wouldn't it be cool if some of us Browncoats came up with a podcast that was in effect a modern radio play set in the 'Verse. Now I personally don't have the tech to put the show together myself, but I am a fairly creative minded guy and can pen stories (I also fancy doing a voice as well) but other writers would be welcome there could be arcs over epsiodes and there could be stand-alones and, well you get the idea.
Is there anyone else interested in this kind a thing? Or am I a leaf on the wind for this one?
I mean we'd need it all, voice talent, techies, editors, sound effects, music, probably a web page, and all that.
Any other ideas or interest post in the thread, pm me, whatever!
I just thought it might be a cool idea to continue to explore the 'Verse and the idea of a podcast/radio play just seemed suitably retro, and suitably cool.
I'd love to hear some interest in this...as well as feedback.

No no no. not a bad idea...perhaps just an idea that needs some....percolating....before folks can respond. I, myself, might be interested in writing a bit, but I have ZERO skills doing the technickel stuff. Very Happy

I think its a really good idea.

I say go for it..

If you get your plans set, write a few "episodes" and then see who's interested you will find a few "techies" that know enough to get you started. Plus there are tons of sites out there to help you out. Podcast 411 is a great place to start (they will be in our show notes this week)

There is a lot of work involved but it is so shiny to hear the final product.

And don't forget, that the signal will place your first cast on our feed so that it automatically goes to our subscribers.

Good Luck!

Sounds like it'd be fun! If you need a voice, let me know. I might be able to get some writing/editing in, too... depends on how work turns out next week, and whether I'll need to be looking for more than one job.

Its a great idea. I have no tech knowledge, NOTE I have no Avatar...LMAO. I would love to hear it though. I used to listen to The Shadow, when I was in Germany as a kid. So GO for it.

I know the Shadow's secret identity. ph33r me!

I remember AFN having all those cool old shows. "X Minus One" was the science fiction radio show.

I, too, have been kicking around the idea of a 'Verse-type radio shows, but I've been thinking about using only the "Verse, but none of the characters.

yeah I have a couple of character sketches. It would be set in the Verse but would not be about Mal & Co. It would be seperate from that, though I wouldn't be opposed to cross-overs. I'm working on a pilot idea right now, and I'm open to input and suggestions, and yeah, tech, not my thing, but I do have some ideas story-wise.

This is an AWESOME idea! I couldn't help much, though, as I don't know much about the technical stuff.

if anyone knows some techies let me know, and I'll post character outlines when they're drawn up so people can do voices and such, or write, and all kinds of swell things. This hopefully isn't just one Browncoat, but many!

I can write. And I would love to get involved in something like this as a writer (but not as voice-talent, nor as editor).

Unfortunately, all my spare time is consumed by the Signal right now, but after show #16, we're going to slow down to a more reasonable pace, precisely so that we do get more free time to do other stuff.

What sort of techy stuff do you need to know? We've learned some of it. Summer must know a fair bit too.

Well, I'd be more than happy to take in as much creativity as I can get. I've got a good solid, almost fully-formed idea of what I see these characters doing, and I can see who most ofthem are. And let me tell you, they all have secrets!
So Kate and Summer in terms of helping out, by all means! I'm fairly sure I know where it starts, and I know some of the big revelations that are coming down the pipe for these characters. And if we can get voices, music, sound and let's face it a really good editor.
This will just be shiney!
I finish work early on Tuesday, and after I come home, and work on my novel for a bit, developing this is next in line. So I can email you outline details and the like if you're interested, and I'm more than happy to hear feedback and incorporate it as well.
But I won't lie, I do have a good solid idea who they are and where they are going, and it should be interesting.

I wouldn't mind doing voice work (but like Jill said it would have to be after the signal slows down) but something you might want to think about.. is how you will record. Articles are a lot easier to do because you don't have to do any acting... in something like this.. its better when the actors can work off each other.

Yeah, that's the real stumper. I mean it's not too hard to have a big audio webchat. But to get in there and be able to record it proper. There's the hold-up. Any ideas from anyone on that one?
In the end... who knows, it may just have to be a fan-fic. But if there's a way to do it on a podcast, I wanna find it.

You could always try it with everyone doing thier lines separately and then edit them together.. in which case I would give really good stage directions... meaning lots of <angry and frustrated> or <just above a whisper>

This is definately more work for the writer, but it would also ensure the parts were read exactly as you intend them and couldn't really be interpreted by your actors.

well, happily Miranda I tend to write that way anyway, as I can usually hear how the dialogue is supposed to sound in my head. So those kinds of stage directions... easy-peasy!

In my experience of writing something we're doing for Winging It, even that won't work. There is only one way to get it right.

In addition to the script, (which obviously must exist), get a microphone, record all of the parts yourself, as they sound in your head, distribute the recording to your cast, and tell them: Do it exactly like THIS.

ok folks, here's the first glimpse of what's percolating in my mind, and hopefully might catch some of your interests. I will tell you this isn't everything, this is simply a quick brush stroke, and I went through and deleted a LOT of spoilers, cause there will be a lot revealed through the eps I hope.
What do ya all think?

The Ship: Converted Trans-U cruiser, reinforced core, stolen from a marauding clan of Reavers that the captain did away with. The ship has been re-christened Poena.

Captain Donus Bai
Prior Alliance Commander, was drummed out of the service for unknown reasons. Lost his entire family when the Reavers pushed out into Alliance territory and did away with his wife and family. He hunted them downand claimed their vessel. Now he lives on the edges, trying to avoid the Alliance and his past. Hiring himself and his crew out as gunmen, or other odd-jobs. Lots of baggage, and secrets.

Jaxter, Ship's Engineer.
Escaped Canton Mud Farms where he was an indentured slave. Has installed a mud area on the lower decks of the Poena where he crafts his own parts as needed, customizing the ship's engines to meet the captain's needs.

The Xiong siblings, Kate & David, the muscle.
Grew up on the edge of the Verse, rough and tumble mercs.

Assis Doyle, Nurse
Came from the core worlds, and a rich spoiled family. She knew there was more to the 'Verse than what the Alliance told them, and she wants to see it. There's a history with the Captain and we've yet to learn what it is.

LOL Thats true.. giving us examples is how you did it on ours.. so I guess no matter how much you give directions there is still interpretation needed from your actors Smile

Sounds like you have a great start! Smile
You are doing real good with only five main characters. Will make life much simpler when you start to record.
Is Kate muscle too? I love women in non traditional roles! Smile They are the most fun. I would much rather play her than a nurse from the core! Muscle tends to get the best one liners! heehee

Male Captain, Female nurse. Hmm... Why not the other way round? Let's break some stereotypes.

Also, a minor quibble, but you don't steal from Reavers. By saying this, you are not giving power to the captain, you are taking power away from the Reavers. Like in Star Trek - once upon a time, the Borg were scary (see "Q Who"). Then Janeway made them look like pathetic morons. I prefered them when they were scary. Likewise the Reavers. They are so scary that even Jayne won't go near them. I'd prefer to leave them that way.

Oh believe me CK they're still scary! But there are scarier things in the 'verse as well.
And yup Kate is definitely muscle!
As for Assis she's not a spoiled rich girl more of a waif character.
Although I like the idea of a female captain as well, I have some definite ideas about my friend Donus.
Thanks for the feedback! And don't be afraid to share more!

And as a side note screw the whole Nurse idea, she may be waifish, but she's a smart (book-smart at least) full on Doctor with a very developed sense of morality, and ethics.
Guaranteed to cause friction with our captain.

I think the captain should be a pre-adolescent who saves the ship every week. That's never been done before.

Oh, wait, I forgot about Wesley Crusher.

One thing worth mentioning - though it's pretty obvious anyway - Make the first episode gorram brilliant. A lot of people will make the decision whether or not they want to hear episode two based on whether or not they liked episode one. Lots of people will download episode one just to hear what it's like. Plus, you already have a guaranteed audience of thousands for episode one, because the Signal will put it on their feed (if you want them to).

But you'll have to fight for an audience for episode two. And the only weapon you have in your arsenal is whether or not episode one "hooks" the audience.

Hey guy's why don't we try an abandoned ship that Reavers had already stripped and killed the crew, keeps reavers in their own right as scary and still a threat but the capt. get's his ship...maybe more of a backstory peice, plus it makes the capt. as less of a bad ass and questions his morality in this big lie he's made. The whole brother sister thing could be more of an ex companion truned bad ass chick fighter...something along those lines like he saved her from some wretch and they vowed to stay together but live like borthers and sisters...just tryin to build some backstory. I know I'm new here and if I've overstepped my bounds let me know. it sounds like a project I would love to jump into with you guys.
