I'm currently looking into building an audio drama to help out those who are visually impaired to be able to enjoy the comic books.
If you would be interested contact AudioComics@gmail.com

Specifically looking for voice actors who can do passable impressions of the crew, and extras. |

Would you actually have to be visually impaired in order to get the audio drama? Only, I'd quite like to hear it too, once it's finished...
(Also, I happen to think that J.D. does good impressions of Wash and Book) _________________

No, but if I say that it's for the visually impaired it seems more altruistic and thus as I tread lightly on copyrights people are more forgiving. Besides, it was the e-mail from the visually impaired woman who inspired this idea.

I'll volunteer. Don't want to tie myself down to anything specific, but if you are short a voice or two, i'd be glad to pitch in. I did chorus in high school drama, so being an "extra" is old hat for me.
I also agree that JD does a great Wash and Book.

Hmm... Reading the whole comic verbatim would be a copyright nightmare, way way in excess of anything the Signal has ever done. I actually believe that a lot of people would prefer an audio drama to a comic, so you would be impacting their sales.
My personal take on this would be that it would be nice to do it "officially". As in, actually collaborate with the writers of the comic book, publish the audio-book properly, change money for it, and let everyone involved get their rightfully due royalties. I think that we've probably got enough "cred" by now to pull off a deal like that.
(That said, I'm sure that if a few copies made their way into the hands of genuinely visually impaired people a little bit sooner then no-one would complain)
Plus, if you went the "legit" route, then there's always a chance that the original cast of Firefly might like to join in.
Take a look at the Doctor Who audio dramas for comparison. These are produced by Big Finish, and feature the original cast. They are hugely popular. They sell loads, and kept Doctor Who aliive during the period that it was canceled.

Although I wasn't suggesting doing it under The Signal's title, or actually including them in any way what you suggest is an interesting premise.
I should talk to those involved. There still might be room for people to do extra voices and the like if they are so inclined.

I think that the visually impaired person who sent us an email would be happy with just one person reading the text and telling the story though. They just want something. So why not make a relatively simple voice recording, which we could give to that listener, and any others who needed it, and then maybe look into getting a more professional version done later.
That keeps everyone happy, I think. _________________

I personally was thrilled with Jill’s piece on the comics. I sort of treated my situation (legally blind) just as another fan who couldn’t get copies… LOL
Copyright law on this is confusing. I use books recorded: commercially, by nonprofit organizations, through government grants and by individual acquaintances; the only thing I’m particularly sure of is I can’t copy anything... and that for the noncommercial stuff, be certified disabled. The Library of Congress has a diverse selection including a lot of obscure fiction, but I’m doubting their readers will touch on Serenity/Firefly any time soon.
Dramatizations of comics are nothing new; the people that did Star Wars put a few out in the 90s. They don’t seem like they’d require much effort either. Which publisher did the comics? Maybe we really could convince them to make one. At any rate though, simply satisfying curiosity as far as Jill mentioned is more than enough of an endeavor I’d think…
Maybe someone (maybe even someone revered by us Browncoats) could volunteer to read Serenity material for the Library of congress… |

A number of old-time movies were also recorded for radio by the original cast members. You can follow them pretty well, but of course it helps if you've seen the movie, or recall what the principal actors look like. And realistic streets, houses, trains, and so forth can be taken for granted, whereas Serenity, Reavers and such would be helped by additional narration. _________________ Robert W. Franson

Update - The short term fix for Christina (original email to the Signal on this thread) was that I got to read the first comic to her over the phone as I'm in DE and she's in MD. I only got through the first one on speaker phone for her and her husband, before they had to go when someone picked them up to see Serenity on opening night without me...GRRR...I waited till Sunday.
I claim credit for telling her about the Signal, but she's had more shindigs at her place than I have.
But if you want to do a spiffy version of that with more than one person doing the voices, I'd be happy to help! |

okay let's do this. For fun, not profit, and nothing professional. People send me a 1 minute sampling of the voice they want to do. I'm gonna do mal, and I'll do jayne if i have to as well.

I put the spaces in there to prevent bots from grabbing it.
Some night we'll all get online with our mics, and we'll do a reading, and I'll use audacity to record. I'm not sure if googletalk has multi user capabilities, so we'd probably have to use another program. Anyone have a good one? _________________ They took my sky from me. |

Hey where is she in MD, I am also, and it might not be long distance for me to read it to them. _________________ www.fireflytalk.com |

Waw! Thanks for the great responses! My husband and I really appreciate it. I'd love to volunteer to help with the audio commic but, I'm incredibly untechnical so I don't know how me recording my own sound files would go.
As an amusing aside, when we went to see the movie on opening night, my husband told the people behind us that our friends would be describing the movie to us so, there would be lots of extra talking. The man behind us offered to add inaccurate descriptions to what our friends told us. He turned out to be too involved in watching the movie himself, though. Can't really blame him for that but, I was curious to see what he would have said.
Anyway, thanks again, everyone. |

| http://fullcastaudio.com/ is a nice company that does full-cast adaptations of lots of things... I suspect "Those Left Behind" doesn't suit their... sensibilities, but they might be able to offer tips on things like permissions. |
