Thanks. No apologies for being impatient... I can't help it. It's like Christmas every Wednesday. The only thing better would be if it were already Friday and I could go see EVERY SHOWING of our Big Damn Movie!

So, does this delay give you the chance to get in the late breaking news that a real Firefly Soundtrack CD will be released Nov. 8 by Varese Sarabande (the same company that produced the Serenity soundtrack)?

No, sorry.

We could include that item if we rerecord parts of the show. And then re-edited. And then went through a further review and quality control process. But then you'd have to endure another several days' delay.

We just have to live with the fact that no podcast can ever be an up-to-date news source. Even if we could get late-breaking news in at the last possible moment (which we can't), in reality there would still be a delay for most of our listeners between the show's publication and their hearing it. (For example, I have shows backup up on my iPod from over a week ago that I haven't got round to listening to yet).

We tried being up-to-date once before (in show #1). It didn't work. The pressure of trying to do stuff at the last minute meant that the quality sufferered badly, not to mention putting me through serious stress.

For up-to-date news, see Jeremy's news page, this forum, and all the usual sources. The Signal will endeavour to be accurate, but we will never be up-to-date. No podcast ever can be. Especially not one which tries to maintain high production standards. Sorry guys, but that's just not our function.

Anyway, it's only one day late! Give us some leeway, please! Wink

Okay, you guys get a pass because you were a day early last week. And because it's no doubt a busy week for all (I just got back from trying to get on camera at the Today Show half the morning, for example). And because you've got the best 'cast out there. And because....aw, hell, just put it out when you put it out, we'll all still be here. Wink

Despite the best efforts of the Blue Sun Corportation.

Funny story that.

We went for a final tweak of the show to make sure it was perfect, only to discover that the "Blue Sun Intro" sound clip had replicated itself over two other clips and thus required the show to be fixed after I thought it was done. Apparently I have gotten the Blue Sun Virus. Just goes to show you how much power they have. They can infect my computer from 500 years in the future.

But now there is joy in the world because the presents were brought back.

Thanks for the info on podcast #12 regarding the soundtrack. I downloaded it from Fox Music today and added the tracks into iTunes on my Powerbook. There were two things I discovered right away. The album appears to be incomplete and it seems to have been digitized in quite a hurry.

The reason I believe the album may be incomplete comes from the track numbering. There are 17 tracks on the album, but if you use the "Get Info" command to get the track details they all say (some number) "of 23". Going through the entire track listing shows that track numbers 6, 7, 10, 11, 19 and 22 are omitted. The most obvious item that is missing is the Ballad of Jayne.

The evidence that the album appears to have been digitized in a hurry also lies in the track info. Poor punctuation and capitalization are abundant. The main title is even missing the album name present on the rest of the tracks.

All the clues point to this being a real slapdash job by Fox to capitalize on the movie launch. I'm grateful to have these few tracks, but I feel somewhat cheated having paid for a full album and only getting what appears to be a partial one. The one thing that they did right is post a link to the album cover art right next to the "Buy" button. I was able to add it to each of the tracks after adding them to iTunes so it will show up on my iPod when they play. Shiny!

This has been discussed elsewhere already I'm sure, but the reason for the incomplete track listing and the shoddy quality is probably because Varese Sarabande will be releasing the OFFICIAL Firefly soundtrack, on a real official-like cd and everything, on November 8th.

Here's the link...

I heard Podcast #12 and wanted to make sure you guys announce next time that there is an EXCELLENT movie adaptation to "The Killer Angels" that stays very faithful to the book, which in turn stays very faithful to the actual documented history of the battle of Gettysburg.

The movie is simply called "Gettysburg," it's about 3 hours long with an intermission in the middle, and I believe it came out in the early 1990s. It really is an excellent movie and at times it is very stirring, especially at the end of the first act. It follows individual soldiers and commanders and you get a true sense of the idealism and loss that they must have gone through, and what inspired Joss to create the character of Mal. I highly recommend it to all fans of Firefly!

So does anyone know if the updated version of "Mal's Song" is or will be available for download? My wedding anniversary is coming up and my better half is IN. LOVE. with that song (as am I)...

Is that the new, "improved" version that just aired in episode 12? And I've never used Bittorrent... does that create mp3's that can be put on an iPod?

I'd take offence to that "damn Aussies" comment if I weren't so pumped that I've seen the BDM!
Oh, and the podcast is good, too. I've become quite curious about the American Civil War since I became a Browncoat, so I thank you guys tremendously for that. Loved the Morena interview, the sneak peek of Done the Impossible, and am proud to say that I am a Real Browncoat and I'm almost a Master of Chinese.

So would I. If I had been producing that show, that comment would never have been allowed in. I did consider whether or not I should insist on its being edited out, but in the end I figured that, having passed on the captain's hat for this show, it would be churlish to start undermining the rest of the crew. And I guess I figured it was probably no worse that Kari saying "I hate you" of anyone who had already seen the movie (including Les and myself).

But rest assured, it will not happen again.

Actually, this show was something of a joy for me to listen to, precisely because I wasn't greatly involved in creating it. (I wrote "How to Speak Chinese", and some made minor tweaks to the the US civil war feature - that was pretty much it). Normally, I run the show, so it was an absolute delight for me to sit back and do almost nothing, and then see a finished show materialize. So when I heard the finished show in its rough-cut form, it was amazing. I guess I have an idea now how you guys must experience it.

Please say lots of nice things about this show, because I think that Miranda and J.D. did an excellent job of getting it together in my almost-absence, and they should be encouraged.

Jill

It's fine. I think I was just looking for an excuse to brag that I've seen the BDM!
Sorry.
In any case, I'd probably be cursing other countries if they'd gotten the BDM ahead of Australia. So, no worries.

It was indeed a very well done show. I got to listen to it in the only (but horrifically long) break I had in my first day back in school. Nothing like Firefly to make you forget about the stresses of three back to back history classes…! Very Happy

The Civil War piece looked at some things I never did consider. I’m willing to quibble about details if anyone’s interested…? Smile

Gettysburg is a fine film but it's actually in excess of four hours long... Smile I think running time is 252 minutes or so and is as true to the novel as possible; though budget constraints make some really big scenes kind of silly; highly recommended; as are the other books/movie from Michael and Jeff Shaara.

In closing, thanks for yet another shiny podcast!

It's exactly the same as me, for the past couple of weeks, telling everyone that "I hate them" for seeing the movie before me. Smile I hope our Aussie audience doesn't really think I hate them...it's all just jealousy. Smile I love Australians...I really do!!

If you were offended, I apologize.

I got jealous of people who got Metal Gear Solid 3 and Star Wars Episode III before us, so I take no offence. No harm, no foul.

I hope this is true! I really want the soundtrack, but I am not willing to pay $10 for mp3s!

The podcast renewed my interest in reading Killer Angels, but the movie was an undertaking to get through!! I think I slept through parts of it! And I'm a Civil War buff too!!

Having watched it many times, I highly recommend the Gettysburg movie. It's essentially a fictionalized documentary, historical rather than plotted. And true to the Gettysburg campaign and battle histories that I've read.

I just discovered your poscast yesterday and I was eager to find out more info about the tv soundtrack. I become a Firefly fan in July..but that's a story for a different time and place....

I searched the internet and came across the following link:

http://www.cduniverse.com/productinfo.asp?PID=6986306&style=music&frm=frooglemusic

They claim it is going to be released in NOV, although I trust Amazon more..and they do not have any info about the tv cd (only the movie soundtrack)

But I thought I would share the info and see if anyone can confirm or deny this as being a hopeful sign...

In fact, there won't be anything in that news item that can't be learned simply by following that link, so you might as well just follow the link and forget about waiting for show #13.

While "News from the 'Verse" endeavors to be accurate, it can never be up-to-date, such is the nature of podcasting. Asking someone to wait for a podcast in order to hear news is silly. Guys, if you want your information now, your best bet is always going to be a live internet source.

I was being a little vague (i.e. a couple days) just in case we had any unforeseen technical difficulties at the last minute. Wink
