Shiny if true!

| Quote: | | Our ever reliable industry sources are telling us that Universal will soon announce the DVD release of Joss Whedon's Serenity for 12/20. Early word indicates that the disc may include Whedon audio commentary, along with at least 4 behind-the-scenes featurettes (Future History, We'll Have a Fruity Oaty Good Time, Re-Lighting the Firefly and What's in a Firefly), a video introduction to the film by Whedon and 6 minutes worth of outtakes. Some of the details on the extras comes from the BBFC website. We'll post more as it comes in. |

An early DVD not only gets the XMAS sales.. it COULD put the movie in front of the Academy for one of those tech kinda oscars...hehehe
In fact, maybe we should band to gether for a "For your consideration" ad in the trades.. there was a recent back page THANK YOU ad to Universal ( verrry class; might I add?) so.. nothing says THANK you like a little gold statuette.. hehehe
and I think Serenity COULD get a nom in score (lovely musical bits) or costume, or art direction or fx...why not???

About the Oscar stuff: I think a movie has to be out for 4 months before a DVD release to be considered for Oscars. So, for a December release, it would put Serenity out of the running for any Academy Awards.

I don't believe there is any such rule, but I wouldn't sweat it. Great as the movie is, I don't think there are any Oscar contenders in it. That would be worthy of a topic of its own... |

I don't think DVD releases have any effect at all on the Oscars (which have been around since long before television even existed, BTW), except of course to allow members of the Academy to see the movie.
I do think Serenity is deserving of a visual effects nomination, though. In all fairness, I think War of the Worlds deserves to win that category, though Revenge of the Sith (sigh) probably will despite the inconsistency in the quality of its effects. |

Sorry, but I don't think FX are Serenity's forte. They did well for the budget, but come on - they were not the greatest.
I would go with "War." |

| Well I, for one, will be giving the DVD as an Xmas present to people, one more way to support the movie! I'm really excited to see what kind of special features it has. Has anyone heard any rumors concerning that? |

Here's what I've heard:
* Joss Whedon commentary
* may include "deleted scenes" that were filmed but not included in the movie. Joss has said there will not be a "special director's cut" with those scenes added in, because he was the director, and did not want those scenes in.
* May include a documentary. I'd heard that Joss had a documentary crew around filming while he was filming. Dunno if this will be in the "initial" release or in a shinier special edition later. Since we don't have a firm release date yet, it's hard to say. _________________ Tales From The 'Verse Podcast - Stories You Won't Hear on the Cortex.

...And learned...
"Universal has today officially announced Serenity which stars Nathan Fillion and Alan Tudyk. This Joss Whedon directed sci-fi will be available to own from the 20th December, priced at around $29.98. The film itself will be presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic widescreen, along with English and French Dolby Digital 5.1 tracks. Extras will include a feature commentary with writer/director Joss Whedon, a director introduction, deleted scenes, outtakes, a Future History: The Story of Earth That Was featurette, a What's in a Firefly featurette and a Re-Lighting the Firefly featurette."
This and the series are at the top of my Christmas list! |

Not too many movies come out at that price. I payed 30 bucks at Amazon for 14 hours of Firefly. I'll pay 30 for the movie on DVD but be highly dissapointed if that action did not result in a sequal. The production costs would be the same, regardless of the content.
As for the artwork, I think a simple shot of the ship in the blackness of space would suffice. The cover is way too busy "experience the ultimate action adventure" sounds too much like a begging ploy. The quote is good, but even the Serenity logo/graphic was changed.
btw... www.universalstudio.com has fixed their link to the movie site:) |

The cover isnt there to attract the fans....you will laready buy it. Its there to attract the people whove never seen it, and it does catch the eye. _________________ http://www.heimdallteam.com

Fair enough thing to say about trying to appeal to the extremely important and sizable non-fan segment. However the real question is, are they doing it the right way?
The cover design appears to be a very standard attention grab containing all the generic elements of excitement (eg. a beautiful girl, explosions, epic battles and guns). The fear is that this could turn off a sizable proportion of potential viewers who are usually more discerning than what most major studio marketing depts give them credit for. And this is just the type of movie for those discerning viewers. This likely "judging the book by its cover" negativity will have a real impact on sales and will almost certainly spell the end of this 'Verse in film format.
Remember it was the marketing as much as the programming decisions at Fox which is what buried Firefly in the first place. Let's all hope it doesn't happen again because this Firefly/Serenity cat is just about on its 9th life. |

| The cover sucks. No offense to Mr. Whedon, but with an off-the-wall premise contradicted by an inside-joke title ('It's the name of the ship ... doncha get it?'), the proper marketing thing would be to upscale the image to something evocative, rather than something patently lurid. Busy, busy, busy is not exciting ... it's just busy. Anyone recognize River in the dolled-up, poofy-haired trollop headshot? Hell no! That's a Troma cover. |

Agreed...if it makes a sequal ok, but I wish the cover art was more true/honest to t1he film.
There are a couple of reviews, on Amazon for the film, already and I'd say they are all right on the mark. The movie was good, the movie was good, the movie was good, and finally one review that says...the cover sucks. Until I read this review I didn't notice the two laser beams shooting out of serenity blowing up the ships. Not sure how I missed that. Somewhere in the movie they should have been able to have gotten some good concepts for art work, instead of making stuff up. Even a shot of the ship in space would have been good. Plenty of reviews on the back with a brief summary of the story.
This is like the commercials I see and think to myself, "who they heck gets payed (quite well usually) for thinking up this tzao gao.

I'm tellin' ya, studio and network execs (generally, there are ALWAYS exceptions) are not paid to think things through or be creative ... they are paid to guess right more than wrong. Amazing. _________________ RIVER: Storm's getting worse.
