You folks sure gave us one heck of a finale. When it was over; I became very sad...
Features were great all around. Your analysis of River was amazingly put together and added quite a bit (especially from sources I consistently fail to take account of). Something got me though; they smuggled River to Boros? Then why would Simon go back to book passage aboard Serenity to go back? Was he doubling back to evade pursuit? He definitely is a sneaky one…
The piece on Wash was insightful and poignant.
I can hardly wait for the special edition and season two.
Thanks again… |

Bravo! Bravo! Attention all crew members of the Signal...
Thank you!
You guys went above and beyond. I can't begin to guess how many man hours of free time you scarified to make all this happen and I wanted you all to know that listening to the Signal has been one of the highlights of my week over the last few months.
And you sure went out with a bang. Best episode ever! The features on River and Wash were both incredibly insightful and emotional. I've already listened to it twice.
Seriously guys, from my heart, thank you. You've made this entire event (anticipation, release and post release of the movie) more enjoyable and memorable. Never have I LIVED a movie release like I did with Serenity.
Enjoy your well deserved time off. Keep flying.

It's great to hear how much people enjoy the podcasts. Thank you very much for taking the time to post your messages.
The segments on River and Wash in this weeks episode were very powerful. Kudos to Jill and Tracy for writing those pieces. Miranda also did a great job reading the one on River.
When I listen to the completed episodes each week I try to take off my 'crew member' hat so I can enjoy them just like everyone else.
It is an honor to be part of such a hard working group of people who are so willing to give of their time and resources so all of us can keep flyin in the 'verse!
Your humble 'newshound'

I just finished listening to it and it was a gorram shiny podcast. I say stand up and take a bow. Serously it helped my firefly/serenity cravings when i was not watching the movie 6 times, or peruisng hte msg boards of whedonesque.com universal serenity board, canadianbrowncoats, montrealbrowncoats, then there is the firefly music, there is the watching of the firefly dvds.... the river tam sessions.... the shindigs of fans...
I think I need help. I think Im addicted.
Congrats you guys are an invaluable part of the 'verse!

I cannot say how much I loved this episode, and this season of this shiny podcast.
Oh, wait, yes I can.
I LOVED IT THIS MUCH!
All the articles were informative and entertaining (I was getting a little choked up over the Wash one - kudos to Tracey), the usual segments were as great as ever, and the news of a definate second season: Shiny!!!
Thankyou soooooo much for this great podcast. Can't wait for more (am counting the days, despite not knowing what to count to). _________________

| Thanks, guys, for adding so much to my entire Serenity experience. Your podcast really helps flesh out the 'Verse for so many of us Browncoats. I am glad to hear that you intend to continue into the future. I think it is efforts like yours that will result in more of the Firefly tale being told. |

First, thanks to all you folks who put out The Signal - it rocks! I only discovered it maybe two weeks ago, but it's awesome! You guys do good works!
I'm just going to throw out a thought going a little deeper on Tracy's piece where he was pointing out that Mal is more of an antagonist and the Operative is more of a protagonist. If you go a level deeper, I think the model of Mal as a hero still holds. One thing that struck me in my second viewing is that in a way the movie both begins and ends with love - in the Operative's analysis of why Simon broke River out, and with Mal talking about the first rule of flying a ship. In that capacity, the roles are reversed; it doesn't seem as if the Operative is truly capable of love, and Mal is an individual capable of deep love - which is why I think he is such a tortured invidual - he cares, but he doesn't want to, because in his experience, it hurts (on a side note, I wonder if that is part of why he let Simon and River stay - he realized, and admired, on some unconscious level, the love that Simon has for River, and he wants to protect that). And in the end, it was his love of people - of the people who are constantly trampled on by the Alliance - rather than love for the 'ideals' of the Alliance (which is more of what the Operative subscribes to) that gave him the strength to believe in something and to do what he did.
Just a thought

Yet another thank you to the entire crew of The Signal. You guys were definitely a part in my conversion. I was browsing podcasts and noticed that you guys were high in the rankings on either Podcast Pickle or Podcast Alley, and though "Hey, my friends said this was a great show. I should check it out." So I did. About 15 minutes into my first episode, I subscribed to your podcast.
And I was hooked. I can't wait to see what you guys come up with for Christmas and for next season.
Thank you for all your work. I know this creation took up a serious chunk of time, and I hope you enjoyed it as much as your listeners. |

| Given River being 17 in 2518, wouldn't her birthday have been in 2500? |

To the crew of the Signal:
You are perfect examples of true fandom. No selfish and needy but willing to meet the needs of others that feel as you do. You did not have to take the burden of putting together a podcast at all and could simply sit on the sidelines like a lot of fans from other series/movies. Your hard work, dedication, and devotion to the signal is why I would love to see this show (Firefly/Serenity and the Signal) never fade away!
Congratulations on finishing an excellent first season and thank you for all that you have done for us Browncoats!
Keep Flying!

Complicated question. Firefly wiki says she was born in 2500. Another timeline says she was born in 2501. Neither is canonical. If she was 17 in 2518 then she would have had to have been born in either 2500 or 2501, but that's a big "if", and I'm not sure it's a "given".
Contrary to the timelines on the internet, I took Mal's statement in Serenity (that River had been on board for eight months) to be canonical. For some reason I figured Serenity to be set in 2517.
One day I'm going to go through all this timeline stuff with a fine toothcomb. Until then, I'm as baffled by the apparent contradictions as everyone else. _________________

Where's the most accurate timeline?
It sparked my interest because the feature reports 2489/90.
In Our Mrs. Reynalds, Inara logs a date on her schedule roundabout October 24th. Assuming, as most seem to do, that the calendar is retained for official reckoning, then the events of Serenity must take place in 2518 because Mal does refer to the events of Our Mrs. Reynalds as around half a year back from when he ran into Saffron again, and this can be somewhat backed up by three weeks of Inara not working in Trash (since at least War Stories) and a trip to the core between those two episodes. I don't mean to say that six months went by (Mal not being the most precise speaker) but at least two months went by... THis would place Serenity in 2518. The middle of 2501 would be the approximate date of birth, is if too early, she'd not be 17 in Serenity and if too late she'd have celebrated her birthday on the ship.
There’s also the CYA tactic of River’s “Day is a vestigial mode of time measurement based on solar cycles. It’s not applicable.” (or there abouts…) Which seems to suggest that we might be in for a long talk… LOL
EDIT It has to be 2501, math thwarts my wider approximation...

That fruity oaty bar recipe looks great - I may try it out this weekend. Although, I may leave out the raisins, as I'm not a big fan, and judging from the rest of the recipe I would guess that the raisins are NOT MANDATORY.
Sorry, just had to slip that in. |

Enjoyed your podcasts...thank you!
Can you please indicate on your web page some sort of "schedule of things to come for future podcasts"...
I am used to checking it every wednesday, but since there is no more consistent podcast on Wednesday, it would be nice to have a heads-up.
PS. The numbers of theatres in Montreal showing serenity is now down to 2 or 3. So I decided to take my employees (6) to see the movie yesterday. Even paid for the popcorn!
Thanks in-advance... Frank _________________ "Do not follow where the path may lead...

Frank, may I suggest joining our mailing list. Since we haven't finished the schedule for the bonus shows it may be hard for our fearless leader to "name the dates"
Here is the link to join the list thesignal-subscribe@yahoogroups.com just send an email and when a new cast is available, you will get an email announcing it!
Hope that helps!

Great finale guys. Can't wait to hear more for the holidays.
Tracy Hickman's analysis was insightful. So great to hear his unabashed geeking out for all things Firefly in the interview before this episode, and to hear his thoughts on story for Serenity in #16.
In discussing the character archetypes of Firefly, he mentioned something called "Dramatica", which I hadn't heard of before. After looking it up, I found out that it's a theory of storytelling. I'm going to spend the weekend with it on my own projects.
I found an analysis of the story of the BDM from one of the creators of Dramatica and thought I would post it. http://www.dramatica.com/story/film_reviews/reviews/serenity.html (spoilers galore!)
Dramatica is rich with jargon, so here's a link to the book: http://www.dramatica.com/downloads/dramatica_book.pdf
Keep flyin. |

Side Note: I bought Dramatica software 2 years ago.
It is as clear as mud and I have had zero use of it.
Now Final Draft (which does not do the same thing at all) has been a huge boon! Check it out! |

Sorry to continue the off-topicness, but I wanted to follow up with something else I found called Celtx. It's an open source scripting and breakdown application and looks like a suitable alternative to Final Draft. Yay open-source! |

| OK, I haven't actually finished listening to ep 16 yet, but I just had to take a breather right now after hearing Tracy's section on Wash. I feel priviledged to have had the oppertunity to hear such great words over a loved character. Add in some of the best editing I have heard on the show to date, and there is nothing I can say but thank you for existing. |
