I was in the process of acquiring all of the season one episodes of the signal when I logged in to find the start of season 2 (good news indeed) and all of the undownloaded episodes from season 1 gone. That is to say that I can no longer click on “get” in my iTunes to acquire them. I still don’t have them all. Yes I know I can download them independently from the site, but then iTunes will not recognize them as part of the same collection nor will it treat the files as “podcasts.” (allowing me to stop in the middle and resume where I left off. Even after listening to other things)
Could you please:
re-allow downloads of past episodes THROUGH iTunes,
or tell me how I can make any mp3 a RECOGNIZED podcast (and part of an existing collection) even though has not been acquired through iTunes.
Thanks _________________ I swallowed a Bug.

No problem. Just subscribe to the following RSS feed, (in addition to, not instead of, the regular feed):
http://signal.serenityfirefly.com/season1/podcast.xml
You'll need to copy/paste that into iTunes, as it won't be listed in the music store. However all podcatchers, including iTunes, will let you subscribe by copy-pasting in the URL of an RSS feed.
That feed is a frozen archive of season one. You should find that information on our website (on the season one page), but if it's not clear enough, or needs to be somewhere else, we can think about how and where to reword it.
Let us know if that works (or doesn't) _________________

I'm having problems downloading season one but as I'm new to the podcasting community I'm not even sure why it's not working
My podcatcher is iTunes and I copied the RSS feed into the 'add subscriptions' bit but it only downloaded the last episode of season one.
I've tried it again but I can't work out what's wrong. It's probably something simple but can someone guide me! |

Worry not, it's not just you, it's iTunes fault.
I'm going to have to make this a frequently asked question, because it keeps getting asked. In summary, to have to EXPAND the podcast by clicking on some little icon somewhere (which might be small, blue and triangular, though iTunes may have changed it) which acts like a + sign in Windows, so it expands a tree branch, like expanding a folder to see the files in it. Anyway, once you've done that, you have to click on each episode individually to change its status to "GET".
Some people like iTunes. I'm not sure why
I'll try to make a FAQ entry out of this, once I've located all the other threads that ask the same or similar question. _________________

Glad to hear that it's not me! iTunes is starting to damage my calm...
I'm only using it because it came with the iPod, do you have suggestions for a better podcatcher? As I'm new to all of this I'm finding iTunes hard to understand but also it's just plain labourious to use. I've never heard of any other programmes. _________________ "Some people juggle geese." |

I use iPodder http://juicereceiver.sourceforge.net/index.php. One big advantage that iTunes has is that its integration with an iPod is very tight and clean. If you don't have an iPod, then that won't matter. I do not have an iPod (I have a Creative MuVo), so I am not sure how well the other podcatchers work with an iPod.

No one is saying that iTunes is bad as an interface between your computer and your iPod. I use an iPod. I use iTunes to get stuff onto my iPod. I just don't use it for podcatching.
Like Les, I use iPodder for podcatching. iPodder gets your "stuff" off the internet for you, and that's pretty much all it does.
By happy coincidence it does also use the iTunes scripting engine if iTunes is also installed, so that your "stuff" ends up in the iTunes "Recently Added" folder. From there, you do have to drag it onto your iPod by hand, but it's all in the same place so it's easy.
There are many, many other possible solutions. We have a short list on the Signal's podcast page, but there are many others beyond that.
My personal solution then is:
iPodder -- to get stuff from the internet onto my computer
iTunes -- to get stuff from my computer onto my iPod _________________

Ah, okay, I was unnaware of the difference. I somehow missed the "All about podcasting" article on the site I'll give it a read and see how I go. I'm itching to hear season one - I'm running out of recent ones to listen to
Edit: Okay I've downloaded Juice/iPodder, but how should I go about transferring the transcriptions from iTunes to the new program - I don't want to double up or to screw something up All this new fangle technology will take a time to get used to. _________________ "Some people juggle geese." |

I don't know what that means. Surely all you have to do is resubscribe to each feed using the new podcatcher? I'm obviously missing something, aren't I? _________________

Yeah, sorry that was my fault I'll try to be clearer:
I have subscribed to the Signal through iTunes and I have about three podcasts already on iTunes. Now that I have Juice (iPodder) do I need to re-subscribe through Juice? Or should the software already pick up that I have subscribed through iTunes?
I hope that makes sense - I'm new to podcasts and iPods and all poddy things and not sure of what terminology there is, so bare with me _________________ "Some people juggle geese." |

Gotcha. You do have to resubscribe. Podcatchers don't, as a rule, interoperate with each other.
So what you do is, you click on the "Subscribtions" tab. This shows you a list of every podcast which iPodder is subscribed to (presumably empty right now). Then you click on the green + button, which means "Add New Feed". Finally, you type (or paste) the URL of the podcast's RSS feed (which for the Signal would be http://signal.serenityfirefly.com/podcast.xml) into the dialog, click on Save, and you're done. Repeat for next podcast, and so on.
Then you fiddle with the options and settings until it does what you want. You can have it check all the feeds manually, periodically, when you launch the application, or some combination of all three. On the "Advanced" tab of the preferences dialog there's a checkbox that says "Show log tab in application". I love this. Tick the box, and then you get a "Log" tab, which gives you a text log of all iPodder's activities. It's not really that useful or necessary (unless something goes wrong, then it's a boon), but it's fun to see. _________________

Thanks so much for your help! Juice is shiny, and much easier to use than iTunes.
Just started downloading season one _________________ "Some people juggle geese." |

OK - I'm struggling with this now. I haven't been able to listen for a while, but was happy in the knowledge that iTunes was storing everything up for me. I've now gotten around to a massive podcast catch up session only to find that iTunes has missed out some episodes of Season Two and I now can't get these.
I get the part where I copy the link, what I cannot find is anywhere in iTunes to paste this link. Can someone help with that?? I don't want to download any other podcatcher, cos - well I just don't want yet another piece of software on my computer.
Edit: Just figured it out for myself and am happily downloading my missed episodes. _________________ I aim to misbehave
