One week earlier than anticipated, here's episode 5. And we have an interview with David Newman. Very Happy

Ahhh! Yay! Thanks for getting an interview with the composer of the music for Serenity!!!
Me? I LOVE the music and it really disappointed me to hear fans bitch about how the music "wasn't Firefly". It wasn't SUPPOSED to be "Firefly". I even heard someone say that they didn't think the composer loved the show.
How wrong they were. Newman "got it". And I could tell he did by the music.
Loved his take on the movie and the characters. He really really Got It.
(By the way, Galaxy Quest is one of my favourite movies.)

Thanks you guys for clarifying that the end of the battle in Serenity Valley and U day were not the same.

I know that lots of people thing both ways, I was thinking about it and formulated a theroy that should satisfy all evidence that I've heard. Basically since we all agree that it was close to the end of the war, but not the official end, I think it may have been the end of the war in one segment of the system. Much in the same way that separate areas surnedered toward the end of the American Civil war, but not everybody at once. This would be supported by the deleated scene from the pilot (I think) when Zoe is telling Simon about how they were left there while the two sideds negociated. I'm no war buff, but if this had just been any battle, the independents would have just retreated, lengthy negotiations would seem to indicate a surender of a large area.

Just a thought. Sorry for the bad spelling.

Thank you, that was a very fine episode, again! Especially, I'm grateful for the interview with David Newman. I've seen the movie, first, and I liked the soundtrack as soon as I took it in consciously (that was on the second viewing, only! Wink), and I downloaded it from iTunes long before I got the movie, or even the series. Ok, I know it's very different from the music in Firefly, now, but I still like it, and I feel even less guilty for that now. As somebody wrote before, David Newman got it, he loves the story and the characters. I like that guy!

Just a note to add a big "Thanks" for the interview with David Newman. I have been one of the people bitching about that gorem Serenity composer who, with such a long list of credits, was clearly an agent of the Movie Division of the Blue Sun Corporation. Displace my beloved Gregg Edmonson and his music, the 11th Firefly character? Perform a job rather than a labor of love? How dare he!!

Pretty narrow-minded of me (hey, there are many reasons I identify with Mal). Mr. Newman converted me with his interview - he clearly "gets it." Now don't get me wrong, I'm not yet ready to say that X'ing Edmonson out of the movie wasn't one of the great injustices in the 'Verse. But I do welcome David to the 'verse and hope he has at least two more opportunities to contribute further - as long as Edmonson also gets to contribute a tune or four.

A great podcast. A very interesting and insightful interview.

After listening to the podcast, I watched Serenity *again* and had a new appreciation for the music. It does work perfectly for the movie.

Near the end of the movie where they show the tombstones and are rebuilding Serenity, the music in that part never fails to get me teary-eyed.

Fantastic!

I posted this earlier, but it seems to have vanished. Maybe this was deleted for some reason... too nitpicky?

Not too nitpicky, just off topic. This thread is for specifically for Episode 5 of the Signal.

On the showers question (which we mentioned in episode four of the Signal), you're probably correct, and there will be a correction in the next episode of the Signal. Please move any further discussion of this topic to the Episode 4 thread where it belongs. Thanks.

"X'ing Edmonson out of the movie [was] one of the great injustices in the 'Verse"

In the Interview with David Newman he says that Joss wasn't happy with the music that HAD been done. Was it Edmonson's? Was someone else tapped and then dropped? If so, anyone know who?

The rumor is that Universal is to blame. Allegedly, they didn't want a TV composer doing a movie score so they got one of their own people in. Nobody liked the result. But Universal still didn't want Greg because he was a "mere" TV composer, not a proper movie composer, so they tried again, and this time got David.

Perhaps Joss could have put his foot down and insisted on Greg, but perhaps not? Who knows the inner workings of the movie biz? Maybe Joss wasn't in a position to insist? Maybe if he had insisted, he would have had to have compromised on some other aspect, like who gets to play Mal or something even more important?

Sounds to me like Joss was in the position of having to make a tough choice, through no fault of his own. And though I would have prefered Greg, David did get it, and was pretty good to boot.

It places us fans in a difficult position though. To make an analogy - just imagine that they had recast Mal for the movie. Wah!. But then, suppose the replacement turned out to be prettty good, and then a lot of new browncoats had come along, introduced to the 'verse by the movie, and prefering the new actor. Would wars be fought on the forums over who was better? Or who should be in the sequel? This is precisely what Universal have done, except that they did it to the tenth character. It isn't fair on any of us, least of all Greg. I don't know what the future will bring, but one day, Firefly, or some spinoff, will return to TV, and when that happens, I want Greg back.

My understanding is that Carter Burwell was supposed to be the original composer for Serenity http://whedonesque.com/comments/5376. As Jill indicated above, Greg Edmonson was "never given a shot at it". Later (not long before the originally scheduled spring release date for Serenity) David Newman replaced Carter Burwell http://whedonesque.com/comments/5931.

I found this information on Carter Burwell's site:

Enjoyed the 'cast, as always.

Listening to the Firefly/Stargate comparison made me wonder: have you considered doing a comparison between Firefly and Farscape? While Farscape has bumpy-headed aliens and the like, there seem to be more similarities between it and Firefly than Stargate and Firefly. Just a thought.

And a good one too. I think Kari and Kevin are our big Farscape buffs, and I don't doubt that one of them will take up your idea soon.
