Thank you very much for the article on DVD Differences by Jill Arroway. I am a US listener who is interested in obtaining the Australian version of the BDM (and possibly others), but have no idea where to look for this. Also, do I need any special equipment to play this DVD, and if so do you have any suggestions for purchasing the equipment?

Where to look: http://www.ezydvd.com.au/mech/quicksearch.zml?f=title&q=serenity&x=10&y=16

The only equipment you'd need would be a multi-region DVD player. Nothing else.

FYI, re: the technical question about not seeing other planets/moons in the sky, we do see such, at least once. It's in the crooked-camera shot of Mal in The Train Job, lying on the ground during the opening sequence and getting on the radio to call Wash. There are other planetary/lunar bodies in the sky in that shot.

Yep, onetruebix beat me to mentioning that shot. And it's an interesting one because it was implied in one of the commentaries that Nathan being off center was by accident, but they decided to use it anyways and add some a nifty moon CGI shot afterwards.

Great podcast as usual, guys! Really enjoyed that Hero of Canton re-mix that someone sent you...let me know if I can play it on Firefly Talk sometime. Wink

Thanks for the link. Looks like I would also need a TV that can display PAL formatted items, am I reading that correctly? How does one obtain a multi-region DVD player, and do you have any suggestions for finding a TV that can play PAL correctly (if mine cannot already)?

Well, you can also have a signal converter between the DVD player and the TV, to convert the PAL signal to an NTSC signal. Many of the region-free DVD players come with a signal converter anyway.

I can honestly say... I haven't seen I Robot nor do I have a desire to...though I heard it was a decent flick.

No, you are not reading that correctly. A multi region DVD player is the only thing that you need. The DVD player will accept either NTSC or PAL (or SECAM) discs as input, but will emit whatever is standard in your part of the world as its output. Thus, it will connect to any TV screen.

That's what mine does.

CantGetDown wrote:

The usual places. Amazon.com will do nicely. I just typed "multi-region DVD player" into an Amazon.com search and it came up with 51 results. The third one in the list, for example, said: "Daewoo DVD-161S 5.1 Ch Multi Region Code Free DVD Player 110 220 Volts PAL NTSC. Used & new from $35.95"

So, for the price of a Firefly DVD boxed set, you get everything you need .

CantGetDown wrote:

You don't need one. If you have a SINGLE region DVD player (say, a region 2 player, for example), then you would need a PAL TV to go with it, but in a MULTI region DVD player, you'll get the right output.

You could also look into a software solution. DVD region encoding is enforced in software, not in the hardware reading the bits off of the DVD. Physically DVD players of any region could be identical except for the "i can play region X" setting burnt into them. If you don't mind watching the movie through your PC and it already has a DVD reader you can get software that will switch regions or play DVDs for any region. There are also hacks that let you do this on your PC, but they are illegal in many locations so I can not recommend them.

Ya know...I was wondering about that. I hacked my Apex DVD player so that it's a Region 0 (or region free) player. It plays my aussie Serenity disc just fine, but I wasn't able to find any info that said if my Apex TV was PAL-compatable or not. (It's an EDTV) Either way....the aussie DVD is great and I recommend that EVERYONE pick it up!

It IS pretty good....not great, but an enjoyable flick. It's also hard to believe that Alan was the robot in the movie, because the character is so emotionless during it. (well mostly) If you can find it cheap pick it up...it's worth it. Or I'll find a cheap copy for you if you are interested....it pops up quite often in the used places around here.

How about having everyone who listens to the podcast go to the fox store page here http://www.vipfanclubs.com/searchProductsAction.do?searchTerm=firefly&x=11&y=9

And search for the word firefly

thats it.

I would bet that they monitor this site for trends of what merchandise is popular that they are not providing. For instance if they see a bunch of searches for firefly, they know there is interest. Just an idea.

I understand some folks would like to download a mp3 copy of 'the hero of canton' from episode 7. If anybody could suggest a place on the 'cortex' to put it, I'd be happy to make it available.

How about the Firefly Filk forum?
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/firefilk

It's a Yahoo group, which means they allow file uploads.

There's a version of 'the hero of canton' that's been posted at:
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/firefilk
I have a better quality mp3 that I'm trying to get posted there if the host can handle it.

You can use a service like yousendit.com to share files. They do limit the number of downloads and how long the link stays active but for FREE it's a pretty good option.

The authoritative, up-to-date links are always on our website at http://www.serenityfirefly.com. Some users have experienced intermittent problems downloading episodes before. I recommend that trying again later, that has fixed pretty much all of the download problems that other users have experienced so far.
