Woo hoo! The Signal has been nominated for both of the categories Movies/Films and Best Produced in the People's Choice Podcast Awards over at www.podcastawards.com.
Now comes the hard part. We need your votes. We need you to vote every day for two weeks, between Friday July 28th and Friday August 11th.
There is one minor complication. Unfortunately, both the Signal and Firefly Talk were nominated in the same category (Movies/Films). But the Signal and Firefly Talk work together for a common goal. We won't be in competition with each other, and we urge you not to split the browncoat vote (which could result in both of us losing). The Signal and Firefly Talk therefore collectively urge you all to vote for the Signal in this category. We will put our joint energies into getting the award for Firefly Talk next year. _________________

Both The Signal and Firefly Talk are nominated, cool. And the first two podcasts I ever listened to (The Signal and Podtacular) are both up for an award in the same category. _________________

Yes. It's kind of good news, because it proves that Firefly is popular. But you can't vote for both at the same time. And if you vote for both of them on alternate days then that would just mean that each would get half as many votes, which would mean that neither will win. It would be a real bummer if the sheer popularity of Firefly caused both Firefly podcasts to lose!
That's why we're asking you not to split the browncoat vote. Signal this year; Firefly Talk next year. We need to be united in this. _________________

Actually, there's another good reason to be glad both Firefly Talk and the Signal were nominated, aside from it showing how popular Firefly is.
This in fact means that (as long as we can get a non browncoat vote split) the Signal is only up against three other podcasts in Movies/TV instead of four like all the others! _________________ Cheers,

That's true! In fact, when Eric tried to withdraw Firefly Talk from the poll, and the awards people said no, he came to the exact same conclusion.
I guess next year we'll try to avoid getting the Signal nominated, so there's no possibility of a split. But it turns out it's actually quite difficult to avoid getting nominated, because it's not about how many people nominate you. If only one person nominates you, you can still (at least, in theory) end up on that list of five. It depends on all sorts of things like whether the RSS is valid, whether the website is easy to navigate, and stuff like that. So it shows that not only is Firefly (and both podcasts) popular, but also that both podcasts are sufficiently professional. Regardless of that though, we'll be pushing for Firefly Talk to win next year. (But let's win this one first!) _________________

I'm baffled by the 'democratic' status of this method of voting. What kind of election would it be if, for example, the voters for the next US President could each go to the polls every day for two whole weeks? A real pain, I suspect, and unlikely to provide a representative result (well, no, maybe the present system doesn't do that either)!
Anyway, are the awards people trying to assess how keen each podcast's fans are (hence whether the fans are willing to vote day after day) or how many fans there are for each cast? Seems to me they are mixing two things here.
As for splitting votes, have you been following the nominations at SyFyPortal? (see http://www.syfyportal.com/genre-awards/2006/index.php)
There is only one Firefly/Serenity split there (for best actress in a movie) but BSG suffers from 2- or 3-way splits in several categories --- which should count (unfairly?) in our favour, for once. _________________ Hell, I've been to the edge.

I have voted 3 times and only once gotten back the confirmation email that they use to count the vote.
I have a hotmail acct and keep checking the "junk email" folder where such things are usually reliably found.
OK, I should have voted more, but it's a little discouraging. I will go give it another try. |

Although their rules say "100% email verification will take place", I've noticed that sometimes they ask me for confirmation, sometimes not. My guess is that once they've decided that an email address is valid, they don't have to ask for confirmation every time around. But anyway, if they don't ask for confirmation, assume your vote has been counted.
Only three more days to go anyway, so just keep at it and we'll see how it goes. _________________

Mal and Inara have a relationship similar to Harrison Ford and Kate Capshaw in Temple of Doom. Nathan has accomplished his desire to be an actor with attributes of Harrison Ford, more than being able to take a punch.
I'm a bit late to this shindig, catching up as quicklly as I can, making my way thru Thoughts now, 2 years behind the power curve. On to Ep 6... |

The "Wagon Train in Space" was how I first heard about Firefly, and why I equated "Firefly" with "Star Trek", thinking both were dreamed up by Gene Roddenbury. How wrong I was about it, but it is what got me on board with the very first utterent of the word, "Browncoat". Even though FOX FUBAR'd with the order, the bar scene of "Train Job" and wanting ever so to be in Mal's shoes, coupled with Serenity rising to the occasion shortly thereafter, I was a Browncoat myself, even had the drifter already.
On to Ep 16, and then my umpteenth viewing of the BDM...
I'm downloading FireflyTalk for CD burnage as I listen. I've out of the verse for quite a spell, and may be very late to the shindig, but I'm spreading the word now... |
