Happy that you won the Podcasting Award, but how come nothing about the Hugo Awards at WorldCon?
Best Dramatic Presentation, Long Form: Serenity (Universal Pictures/Mutant Enemy, Inc.) Written and Directed by Joss Whedon.
Special Prometheus Award to Joss Whedon's film Serenity
Just wondering...
PS: Great interview with QMx! _________________ "That sounds like science fiction."

Sorcerer Mickey, my guess is that they need time to mix and do other post production thing on the podcast so it might have been finished before the news come out! _________________ *~* You love Buffy & you love to eat? Then buy the Bronzer´s cookbook: http://www.lulu.com/content/574632

That's what I was thinking, too, Kessie, especially since this episode came out only 3-4 days after the evening of the awards. My post wasn't really intended to chastise the Signal crew so much as to pass along the news of the awards and go, "Yippee!" _________________ "That sounds like science fiction."

You guys first get to hear the Signal about five days after the news is written. It isn't possible, ever, for our news to be up to date - so we long ago gave up trying. Instead, we pride ourselves on being accurate. Of all the Firefly news sources around, we are the only one which does not report rumor, and consequently we've never had to go back and say "Actually, that wasn't true".
So in summary, if you want the latest, up to the minute news, keep watching this forum, the General Discussions forum, and all the other Firefly forums. The Signal is a podcast, and can never hope to compete with that.
But woo hoo on the Hugo award! _________________

|
|
With regards to the Sliders/Firefly comparison, I would like to point out that Fox messed up the order of sliders as well. Originally, the slide at the end of one show was to the world where the next episode started. However, Fox aired all the shows out of order in a way that made no sense. After a while, the writers realized that Fox would keep on messing up the order and made every episode stand-alone.
Here is the correct order for the first season, according to the Sliders FAQ:
| Code: | Q: Were the First Season Episodes Shown in the Correct Order?
A: Not even close. For some reason, Fox decided not to show the episodes in
the order they were filmed. I don't know why this was done, maybe Fox wanted
to group what they thought were the better episodes together or maybe some
episodes weren't quite ready to be aired so others were shown in their
place.
Assuming that the production number assigned to each episode represents the
order in which the episodes were filmed, here is a list of the episodes as
they were filmed and as they were aired.
As Filmed As Shown
---------------- ----------------
1. Pilot (2 hours) Pilot (2 hours)
2. Summer Of Love Fever
3. Prince of Wails Last Days
4. Fever Prince of Wails
5. Last Days Summer Of Love
6. The Weaker Sex Eggheads
7. Eggheads The Weaker Sex
8. The King Is Back The King Is Back
9. Luck Of The Draw Luck Of The Draw
Just to confuse matters a little bit more, Fox decided to air the repeats of
of the first season episodes in yet another order. The episodes appeared as
repeats in the following order:
1. Pilot, part 1
2. Pilot, part 2
3. Fever
4. The King Is Back
5. Last Days
6. Eggheads
7. The Weaker Sex
8. Summer of Love
9. Prince of Wails
10. Luck Of The Draw |
The first Season ended with a cliffhanger, and the producers had to fight to bring a resolution to it in the second season. In fact the first episode of the Second Season was also out of order (not the first episode produced), with a stand alone 90 second teaser resolving the cliffhanger. |

And? Have you ever known a US TV network get the order of a series right? Even Star Trek was originally aired out of order for Joss's sake! What's worse is that websites and other databases make a point of publishing the "original air date" for some stupid reason, which means that the network defined order gets repeated elsewhere. (epguides.com, for example, still claims that Heart of Gold, Trash and the Message, are "UNAIRED", despite the fact that they have now been aired many times over. These episodes have an original air date - it just wasn't on Fox. (It also incorrectly gives an "original air date" of 30 Sep 05 for the movie! Of course, we all know it hit first theaters 29 Sep 05, ignoring advance screenings and special premieres, but apparently the tiny continent of Australia is too insignificant to count, but that's another rant)
My advice to any company making a sci-fi series these days would be: ignore the networks altogether. Just assume they're going to screw up. Make it for DVD and be done with it. We've got the internet now. We don't need TV networks.
But the Sci-Fi review on the Signal didn't really have much to say about episode order, except that the episodes can be viewed in any order, which for the first two seasons is true apart from the pilot and season cliffhangers. Before the days of DVD, I guess US series makers pretty much had to do that.
Did you like the review, by the way? _________________

I love the new mix on the final chorus
As for the reviews, why not do some comparing Firefly with westerns? _________________ Hell, I've been to the edge. |

Yes, but if you watch the episodes of the first season, you will see that the end of one episode is directly connected to the start of another episode. It's been a while since I watched the show, but I remember one of them starting with them wearing hippie clothes, which was a direct continuation of the hippie episode. The sliders FAQ wasn't saying watch them in this order because they were produced in that order, but because that is the way the story flows.
I remember reading somewhere that the writers of Sliders went away from any kind of story arcs once they realized what Fox was doing to the show (I can't comment on them trying to bring a story arc back in the later seasons, because I only watched the first two.).

I certainly agreed with the more..."non-positive" view of the later seasons. Frankly, they started performing shark tricks when John Rhys-Davies got out... _________________ Cheers,

There's been some talk of that. Not sure at this time what will become of it.

It's not my genre, so I'll have to leave the selection to others who know better and can enlighten us with suggestions for shows we might like to watch.
Are there conversion stories about western-fans who've discovered Firefly? Do we have guerilla marketing strategies to target western conventions, web-sites, forums, and so on? (Do they have such geeky things in that genre?) _________________ Hell, I've been to the edge. |

I recall seeing posts on that type of strategy in the guerilla marketing section. Stuff like "go to boards for other sci-fi and shows, like Lost, etc. and post about Firefly." Of course, politely, and also post on the actual show.
Signal ep 16 had a conversion story in it where somebody found us because of the DS9 sci-fi review. So it does happen, though sometimes it is a coordinated strategy, and sometimes it's a happy accident. _________________ Tales From The 'Verse Podcast - Stories You Won't Hear on the Cortex.
