Nice job. I have always like the musical portions of the Signal but to have it all in one. Nice....

Three musical interludes in normal shows would be awesome!

I already printed out the art and downloaded the first available song: "01-Tree_Leyburn-The_Ballad_of_Serenity"!
I'll be glad to get them all and burn them to a cd so I can listen to them anytime I want!
Thanks for doing this for us! Shiny! Keep Flyin'!
I'll be in my bunk..... hehe Twisted Evil

Help! All the songs downloaded nicely except for "To the Border" by Mary Bowerman. I tried DLing both from the shownotes page and from the Badger page, no luck. I get a file, but only the first few seconds play and then it quits.

The file in question is exactly 4084068 bytes long. I have confirmed that it plays right to the end on my machine. Therefore, either (a) you have not downloaded the whole file (check the file size), or (b) it is encoded in a way not supported by your media player. (We didn't re-encode the file - it is as supplied to us by Mary, apart from the addition of ID3 tags). Check both possibilities. If it turns out to be the latter, I'm not sure what we can do. The whole point was to supply the original, without re-encoding.

Sooooo.....I am coming from the outer rim of lurkdom here, because this episode was too SHINY for words!! But well, I have to say some. Words, that is.
This compilation of the music sections of many of the Signal episodes is beyond Shiny, it is brilliant.... I had planned to extract all the music sections myself and make my own CD, and I am not exactly skilled with that stuff, but I was going to learn it, just so I could have the music!! It might have taken me a year to figure it out.
And now you did it for me. THANK you, Danke, Merci, Muchas Gracias!!
This is soo cool Cool , and I can share it with my friends. YAY.

And while I am at it, I must thank you all for your fabulous work in creating and putting together the Signal each week. I know it must be a lot of work, and it shows because the podcast is quality: Variety of content and guests, great mix of humor and serious stuff, and excellent sound quality and editing, you name it, you got it...I listen when I walk my dogs each morning, and now that I am all caught up on episodes, I started back thru all the old ones. Yup, it's that good.

And you can bet I'll listen to this episode over and over again. AND I am going to make some CDs for my son's FF fan college friends, too.

All fo the musicians are so talented, creative, brilliant and generous with their art. Thanks so much for sharing and making it easy to create a CD....with covers and credits, even.

I'm now officially on a Firefly Music binge first came On the Drift then Songs fromn the Black and yesterday I unwrapped my DTI Soundtrack. I love, love, this episode and all of the music featured on the Signal. To pick just one I'd been wondering for ages where to get a copy of the Old Wounds theme tune and there is was.

Hot Damn!
What a triffic Chistmas pressie!
I'd already excised several of these tunes from the original 'casts for my own listening plaesure, so to be able to DL full quality files and have the excellent artwork done for us was really something. My earlier CD of excised (and a couple of proper DLs) Firefly stuff is always a popular one in the car with my kids and I'm pretty sure that the Bards' Ballard of Joss was responsible for at least one conversion last year. Hopefully SFTB will be able to do the same. It's a wonderful selection of music and just like the 'verse, reflects the amazing diversity and talent of browncoats from all over.

Thank guys. I'm really looking forward to Season 3 of The Signal.
Been listening since half way thru' S1, it was my first 'cast and is still my favorite.
Keep Flyin'

Cheers

Nick

One small quible with Songs from the Black. When I downloaded them using I-tunes I didn't get the proper title/author info it just says episode 1 Songs from the black etc. Any way you can stick that info on save people having to go through and type it in manually?

I think I mentioned about that on another thread. What you say is only true of the XML feed, not the ID3 tags. So, once downloaded and copied to an MP3 player, it will show up as artist/song, as you'd expect.

(In the XML feed, the artist and song titles are in the description field, so maybe some podcatchers aren't displaying that).

Say, how about 2 more images to round out the downloadable CD? Say, one of Serenity in flight on the back of the rear song listing, for those transparent cases? And, perhaps the planet Miranda on the disc itself?

These could be made into most excellent gifts to the unsuspecting converts...

We were careful to avoid using copyrighted images. The images we used were drawn by artist Chris Blight, and reproduced with permission.

We'll probably do another compilation in 2008, so if any skilled artists would like to work on drawing what ironbandit describes, you have about 12 months to come up with something really cool we could use on Songs from the Black 2008. (That's unlikely to be the real title).

Okay, to avoid any copyright issues, let us scale back the art to place The Signal's signet from the 2nd season, tailored to be a round applique for the disc, and maybe a released picture of the cast in character for the inside of the rear listing?

How's the above sound? I stole the image of Serenity from Shiny magazine on the web, can't find it anymore, there were 4 covers and I saw Serenity behind Kaylee, cropped the image so Serenity was there by itself. I use it as an avatar in some other BBS. Might could here, too. That was where I was going to get the image of the Firefly in flight from.

Much as I'm sorry to disappoint, the reality is that season two is done. (For that matter, season three is done!) It's been and gone. It's in the past. We have to keep creating fresh new content all the time, and so we tend not to go back over past episodes and "fix" things. All our time has to be spent on making future content, because that is the nature of a regular show. Though we did once spend a lot of time on S2E24, that time ended the day the show was published. Think of it as the "What's done is done" principle. Smile

That said, if you want to go ahead and make some additional artwork and share it with people, we'd have no objection.

Les Howard of The Signal gave me his avatar, and it will be the label signet of the CD's. I had to resize all of the letter artwork due to a reduction in size that happens during conversion to PDF. I could stop right here, the art is still in 3 pages, but I'd like to had one more image to go on the reverse of Mal's plate (shortlist on the back). I still have to correct alignment issues between pages 1 and 2, the long list of songs on the back of the front plate with Inara and River on a foldcard. Resizing to fit correctly in the jewel case is complete.

The CD label:

A lot of you probably know this, but there's a specific email group dedicated to Firefly and Serenity inspired music. These days it's pretty quiet - I seem to be the only one still collecting the music, but still, that's one place you can get fairly regular updates from me. It's at:

http://launch.groups.yahoo.com/group/firefilk/

Also, there's a thread at Gossi's board where I post updates for all the music I find. It's at:

http://www.serenitymovie.org/browncoats/forums/index.php?showtopic=93

I need to update the links section - the first message in the thread, but all the new stuff can be easily found by going to the newest messages.

And, of course, you can hear music new and old on Can't Take the Sky radio, at:

I surmised from the images that I downloaded that the creator (Chris) didn't try printing for use in a jewel case after conversion to PDF. The images came up short on all dimensions. I'd sent the PDF file (less than 800KB) to Les, and wanted to have it up for folks to MAKE gifts for friends and family this past Christmas, another guerrilla marketing tactic. I did this myself, and the effects have been astounding...all of the folks that I gave it to have become fans, if not Browncoats. So, the following link will take you to the PDF file, and it has printing instructions on it for use with Avery style prepared pages. The file contains 5 pages, the same 3 in a resized format, plus an image of our beloved BDS and Les' avatar.

It's in the Yahoo Firefly forum, and you may not be able to get there without membership, albeit there are plenty of spam entries. You may contact me directly for the file as well...

You surmise incorrectly, on two counts. The creator was me, Jill. (Chris did the artwork; I made the PDFs from Chris's artwork). I most certainly did print them (double-sided!), cut them out, and put them in a jewel case and they fit perfectly, to the millimetre, with inside and outside perfectly aligned. That was, after all, the whole point of making a PDF! That said, obviously I was only able to try out the A4 version.
