Okay, I'm not sure if this is all in the right forum but it does concern the podcasts so, here goes: 1st, I'm not all that tech savvy and I just got my Pod last week so I stumble along and find TFTV "Yay-ness!" I poke around some more and eventually figure out how to download the casts and do and then I'm like "#&!@ I didn't just pay for that did I?" So, there's my first question, I don't think I did but as I'm still a dumb little highschooler *runs around like a headless chicken* I can never be sure. Second, I'd just like to say this is really uber cool. and 3rd (an actual question) I've read the topic about non-canon relationships etc. and wanted to clarify: "So, slash will be considered for the cast? or not so much??"
Thanks,
^_^

Hi Kove,
To answer your questions from your other post and this post:
They were free to download so don't worry. We don't make any money off this. You can download through itunes or go to to www.talesfromtheverse.com to download directly.
As for slash--not so much.
Although we don't categorically exclude slash or AU fiction, our criteria for publication tend to make those kinds of stories extremely difficult to be accepted.
The stories that we play stick pretty close to canon, though we'd be willing to accept some alternate universe stuff, like say, where Wash is alive, or something like that.
The main criteria is that it it well-written and reads like a story from Firefly or Serenity. So, as long as the characterizations and dialogue are good, romance or action are both just fine as far as categories go.
For one, no graphic sex. So most slash is right out there.
Second, we have a story length max of 12,000 words. It is very hard to put together a convincing alternate universe or non-cannon character pairing in such a short span. Not to say that it is impossible, but it takes an awfully talented writer to do it. I've seen it done, but only a handful of times and generally in 20,000 words or more.
There is a second firefly fan fic podcast, Strangely Literal, that does accept slash, I believe (Tabz, tell me if I'm wrong here...)

They are a lot more open to experimental stuff, and also do other Joss worlds, like Angel, Buffy, etc, and not just Firefly.
I'd say check them both out, and if you want to submit something, figure out which podcast fits your writing style.
Stay shiny,
Carolyn (gobluegirl)

To add to what gobluegirl said, this is really the crunch point which rules out slash. You have to ask the question "Would Joss have approved this as a real, actual episode of Firefly (or movie or spinoff series etc.)?" If you can't answer yes to that question, then TftV won't be interested. Basically, we assume people will come to TftV wanting more Firefly, so that's what we strive to give. It's not actually impossible to do strange pairings, but the believability requirement would make it very difficult. Also, graphic descriptions of sex are specifically forbidden in the submission guidelines.

I can actually answer that, despite not being Tabz. They said in an early episode of SL that they were rated "suitable for all". (In the American classification system I think that's G-rated, but I might be wrong. In Britain we'd say U-rated). So, although SL has no problems with strange pairings, they also will exclude graphic descriptions of sex.
The bottom line seems to be, if anyone would like to hear an adult-rated sex-based slash fiction podcast, they're just going to have to start their own. (And that would be fine by us of course, although personally I wouldn't listen to it). _________________

Yep, I will have slash - but it has to be at least PG... (some swearing in character is okay) but explicit isn't allowed (though I and others do WRITE that... and you can find it via my LJ in communities such as darkerspike and etc.
I actually have a slash fic I'm going to be reading soon that falls in the requirements. _________________ Tabz, Slayer of the Podcasts. |
