Loved the episode!

I am really enjoying "Down Time" great job everyone... hehee

and... (knowing no one will believe me) I knew the musical trivia question. Gah. I'm a geek.

Smile

Great idea though.. I loved doing trivia that way.

Great show in the review. Although Jewel didn't much enjoy her time in that episode. (Got some really weird direction, IIRC.)

Trivia question: I was close! Right planet, wrong scene. That wee moment in the middle should have given it away as has a note from another theme. (Don't want to say too much yet as I don't want to give it away.)

Hey, I felt the same way when I figured it out. Actually, I got halfway through the podcast, had to leave, and watched the movie the next day, but I guess the music stuck in my head because when that scene came on, I recognized it instantly. Smile

Yep, the bit in the middle did it for me as well. Overall a fairly tricky piece of music to place, though.

Umm... I didn't see any contact information for Jill Arroway, who does the Sci-Fi Review on the main page, so I'm going to do my review suggestion stuff here.

If people would like me to try and clean this up (and possibly expand on it) and turn this into a Sci-Fi Review segment, I'll gladly do so.

Anyway:
I would love to see a Sci-Fi Review of one of the Captain Harlock anime series.

However, the predicament here is which one to pick.

Space Pirate Captain Harlock (1978) is the first Harlock-centric series. It also hasn't been licensed, and because of how close it was released to the series which Harlock first appeared in (which I'll get to in a moment), it assumes you've seen that series.

That series being Galaxy Express 999. The specific assumption here that I was talking about in the previous series is that you know who Harlock's "Friend Who Died" is. That person being Tochiro Oyama, inventor and designer of (depending on what series you're watching) one or both of Harlock's ships (his first ship, the Deathshadow, and his second ship, the Arcadia). He is killed in the course of this series, but the circumstances of his death are dramatically changed depending on the needs of the story.

The web page for CornPone Flix discusses the continuity. It's a facinating read, though it contains some spoilers. The short version doesn't have any spoilers, so I'll quote that:
The Short Version wrote:
Forget it.

Frankly, there are enough contradictions in Leiji Masumoto's univere (or disparate universes) that if you spend too much time trying to connect the dots, your head will do a Scanners.

So, for those who are interested, here are the series (and films) in which Harlock appears (that I am aware of). Licencing is for the US.
  • Galaxy Express 999 (TV series): Harlock's first appearance. Unlicensed - currently being fansubbed.
  • Galaxy Express 999 (Movie): Licensed but is currently out of print. Domestic copies are dub only.
  • Space Pirate Captain Harlock (1978 - TV series): Unlicensed in the US, currently in fansub. IIRC is licensed in Quebec and France, under the title of "Captain Albator". Major edits were made in the dub and music score, however (sort of like what was done to Macross to turn it into Robotech.)
  • My Youth in Arcadia/Arcadia of My Youth (Movie): Licensed, available in the US on DVD.
  • Captain Harlock: Endless Road SSX (TV series): Unlicensed. Fansub status unknown.
  • Harlock Saga: Licensed, currently available on DVD.
  • Space Pirate Captain Harlock: Endless Odyssey (OAV): Licensed. Currently available on DVD.
  • Space Symphony Matael (TV series): Unlicensed. Currently fansubbed.

Yeah, so, Jill, if you want to pick a Harlock series for a future Sci-Fi review (or the entire proverbial franchise), that's great. If not, that's great too. If somebody wants me to turn this into a Sci-Fi review, that'd also be great.

But, anyway, a little feedback would be great.

I'm here. You contact me by posting here.

That's the right thing to do. But for the record, the sci-fi review isn't solely written by me. Lots of people contribute to it. Your query seems like it should be addressed to the Signal crew as a whole, not solely to me.

Now you see, I would defintely not be able to write that, because I am completely unfamiliar with the material. Someone else would have to write that one.

It's not really my call, I'm afraid. I can't write about something I've never seen. Maybe others in our crew have seen it? Or if not, maybe you might consider writing it yourself? If it's good enough, and we think it's appropriate, then we can run it.

If you do write one though, don't post the article on this thread. No point in making it public before it appears on the show!
