Not wanting to snipe or cause trouble, but Sean sounds like more of an Entrepeneur than a Fan. More power to him, but I prefer "Family". It's the Cruise for me! |
Not to sound like a creep or anything, but having been to Sean's conventions for the past 5 years, I can tell you he is a fan, in fact he is possibly responsible for the making of many a UK Browncoat. Bringing 3 Firefly guests over to a Buffy convention some years ago, when Firefly was little known in the UK. I know plenty of people who were turned on to Firefly just by meeting Nathan, Summer and Jewel at that con, even though they only knew Nathan as Caleb.
On the other side of that, you don't run conventions just for the fun of it, it costs money to bring the guests over, hire the venue etc, if you are not going to at least break even on your cons you are eventually going to run into a Flan situation. |
No offense taken, Cider.
It's just that Sean's comments left me feeling a tad cold. They made me feel that the Cruise will be more friendly, more comfortable, and less like a Business proposition.... _________________ Being made of stars, I often find myself looking upward... toward home. |

Yeah, Sean takes a little getting used to. He can sometimes come across a little harsh and cold. His conventions are a lot of fun, but they do rely on having guests there, and if there is no interest in seeing those guests, then there is no money to pay for them. At the end of the day a convention is a business too, if they don't make enough money to cover their costs then they are going to go under, like Booster.
The difference with the cruise is that, even if they couldn't get any guests, they still have something to offer - a shiny 5 day shindig on a freaking cruise!!! How is that not going to be fun?
Which is a why I think and really hope that there is room for both these events to do really well. _________________ I aim to misbehave

Well I paid in full already so there is no question as to whether I will be on board. But while I love the Browncoats and had a grand time at B3, I hope that we get some BDHs I've never met. Because that is why I'll be there. But I can't afford to go to both this and Sean's.
I agree with the repositioning of the cruise. Even if it doesn't match what I want out of it, it does seem to make the most sense. |

Hey Jetflair,
So, are you going to Starfury? I love your fanfics and you are one of the Browncoats I am hoping to meet. We should have a panel of all the awesome Fanfic writers.
I don't know if you received my messages before but I am hoping to join the 'Appreciat'n our Captian' crew. FollowMal said it was a lot of fun.
Anyway, I agree with you 100% about the difficult choices some of the Browncoats have to make on the Cruise & Starfury.
*Please forgive my typos right now.....2 year old is burning down the house!* |

Jeremy,
First of all, as a new Browncoat I want to Thank You & everything one else who made DTI. Actually, it was the DTI which brought me to the boards & transformed me into a Browncoat.
My husband & I seriously considered going on the Cruise but he is unable to take time off in December. We would love nothing more right now but to get away for a week without kids and work.......and talk endlessly about the show we love!
I agree with everyone here that you have done so much for the Browncoats & this is becoming a tough decision for many.
I know we only exchanged messages a few times....but I hope my appreciation for your hard work means something.
I hoping to Thank You in person someday! That would be extra Shiny!

Oh this is a huge dilemma. I've been excited about the Cruise for months. And then Sean Harry's announcement was made about another Firefly Con in my backyard (I'm one of the lucky ones that lives in LA).
I've been really close to cancelling the cruise since this announcement (the person who was going to room with me already has) but have held off. I'll probably hold off for a little while longer in hopes that some more guests are signed. Because while I'd love to pay over a grand to have a 'party' on a cruise ship, I'd really like a little more structure of a 'Con' where I can still party with attendees and get some pics (I don't collect autographs) with the actors.
I've paid in full for the cruise as well, and if the price is lowered a bit and refunds are given, that would be a positive thing in my case as I'd probably just continue on with the cruise AND go to the Con as well.
Just curious -Are you able to tell us how many people have booked the Cruise? |

Tammy, if you live in LA you may well be able to afford to do both, as you won't have extra travel/accomodation costs to do the Starfury one.
Obviously I don't know what Starfury has planned in the way of prices for this LA con, but their UK cons are very reasonably priced. £75.00 for a weekend pass which includes autographs from each of the main guests, £10.00 for photo ops. £10.00 for extra autographs. Factor in that Jeremy has delayed the second instalment for the cruise and may even be reducing the price - it could be doable for you. _________________ I aim to misbehave

Tammy, we can't announce prices quite yet, but I can say that you should hold tight, it may become quite possible for you to do both, especially since you live in the area.
We are hoping to make the announcement early next week.

One of the really nice things about a cruise is that, everything is a very short walk from your cabin.
This LA Serenity Con thing sounds somewhat awkward to me so far. It's not in a hotel from what I understand and hotels near it are either very, very pricey or very scary and not clean at all. Then you still have to make your way over to the event space. Nothing sounds very close.
Cruise sounds like much smoother sailing to me. _________________ Canadian Browncoats

Yeah, I'm a bit concerned about the venues not being inside a hotel like one would expect to find with a convention. Though, I'm intrigued about having the venues at nightclubs, I dunno how convenient its going to be for all the people coming in fron out of town. |

Yeah, when I saw La Cantina on the list, I remembered what it was like trying to cram 300 people in there on a rainy night. Uh huh. Pull the other one.

That place isn't big enough to hold 100 people comfortably. And if I'm going to a 'party' there, I don't want to be forced to stand outside because there are too many people. |

Just wanted to clarify a few things above -- Sean Harry of Starfury organised La Cantina for the Browncoat Backup Bash, so he knows it was packed - he's posted to say he will restrict numbers.
There's a hotel right on top of all 3 venues called the Orchid Suites -- http://www.orchidsuites.com -- which is $89 a night for a double room (2 people), so $45 each sharing. It's literally right in the area you between the 3 venues. It's clean and in a police patrol area. |

Thanks for chiming in Katy. That's a good deal on the hotel. Book it now, you can always cancel later! |

I found some other good hotels if you don't like the apartment style.
Days Inn Hollywood Near Universal Studios
7023 Sunset Blvd
Highland & La Brea
Hollywood, CA 90028 US
Phone: 323-464-8344
I found a room for $109/ night with a King Bed
The shuttle from LAX is $15.00 each way.
And it is about 1/2 from all the events |

I've been on a cruise before, and I can pretty much reassure everyone that there's gonna be a LOT to do, both BC-related and cruise-sponsored. I honstly think we'll get more bang for our Buck from the BCCruise. I like that Jeremy's scaling back a bit on the Con activities because the cruiseline will have shows and performers nightly, dances in the various nightclubs, a Casino, Bingo (For cash prizes!) and more. Boredom is never an option on a cruise! Throw in a couple hundred Browncoats (Famous and non-famous) and the good times are guaranteed!! _________________ Being made of stars, I often find myself looking upward... toward home. |

I wish you and your hubby could attend, Spacegirl. We have a mutual acquaintance. FollowMal is on my crew at serenitymovie.org . We're the Slightly Irregular Browncoats, and are responsible for things like the Anniversary Job last year and the like. By Big Damn Special Edition I believe they are referring to the Special Edition Serenity DVD which is coming out. It will have more special features than the original - including a cast commentary featuring Joss, Ron, Nathan, Adam and Summer - and I think some of the stuff that was on the region 4 DVD. _________________ I aim to misbehave

From our news:
| Quote: | Ron Glass Confirmed!
Cruise price cut by whopping $400!
March 24, 2007
A double helping of great news! We have confirmed our first Big Damn Hero (ie major Firefly/Serenity cast member for you alliance folk). Ron Glass aka Shepherd Book, will be joining us for Browncoat Cruise! For those that haven't had the opportunity to meet Ron in person, he can put a smile on anyone's face.
We will also be announcing a Buffy VIP guest (not a scooby) sometime next week.
After much hand wringing and number crunching we've decided to change the pricing structure of the cruise, first by massively dropping the baseline price of the Full Event Pass and then by making the autographs and guest photo ops optional upgrades. By doing these two things, we were able to drop the price for a given person by a whopping $400! Yes that means you can now get the Penthouse Suite on Browncoat Cruise for less than it would have cost for an inside cabin!
We are also capping the cruise attendance at 350. So far we've sold just over 100 passes, this leaves less than 250 passes available. With this price drop we expect the spaces to fill up quick.
Why are we dropping the price so much? Our previous pricing was based on the assumption that we would need to pay full appearance fees for four or more of the Big Damn Heros. Due to a certain other Serenity event happening a few weeks before Browncoat Cruise, the availability of the BDH's is quickly becoming limited, and we don't anticipate getting more than three, possibly less. Instead we plan to sharpen the focus of Browncoat Cruise as being just that, a 24-hour-a-day party cruise with Browncoats. The VIP guests and activities are primarily a value add.
That being said, we do anticipate announcing several more "Little Damn Heros" (Firefly/Serenity guest stars and production staff) over the next few weeks and months.
And rather than charging everybody for the autographs and photo ops, if you are interested you can add just the ones you want. Final pricing for autographs and photo ops are still being determined, but autographs will be no more than $20/ea, and photo ops no more than $30/ea.
Also, if you are a Southern California local, and don't have to pay for a hotel to "that other con", you may have noticed that it is now possible to attend BOTH their con and our cruise for less than what our cruise would have cost you yesterday!
For those of you that have paid-in-full for your full event pass, we now owe you a partial refund. We will be contacting you individually and should have the refunds processed in about 10 business days. You will be given the opportunity to apply some of your refund toward room upgrades and/or autographs & photo ops. Please understand that this process will take a little while. |

| FYI, I just (finally) paid for my cruise tickets, so I will definitely be on the boat. As I've said from the beginning, there's nothing that could keep me away from five days on a cruise ship to Mexico surrounded by Browncoats! I will probably miss the Starfury con, though. |

For me its the Browncoat Cruise or nuttin'!! I paid in full with the understanding that we may or may not have some BDH's on the boat and I was willing to go just for a taste of the fun we had during B3...plus I've never been on a cruise before!
The price reduction and the addition of Ron makes this even better in my eyes!
