Universal HD Channel will now start showing Firefly with regularity! They also have a new forums/boards for Firefly and I'd wager people to listen to our comments since it's all Shiny new as of April 2007.
Let's get there and flood'em with Browncoats and show'em Firefly/Serenity is something they should keep flying. Mayhap if we make enough of a raucous they will give Joss the money to push the button.
Let's get'em Browncoats!
Here is the boards:

If I recall correctly they had something posted a while back saying they will be showing the Firefly episodes on Saturday nights starting in July. Sounds like PARTY NIGHT will be every Saturday night starting in July in front of the HDTV _________________ Firefly fan by way of the Serenity Movie, but I also play with Snowcats, guns, dogs, tractors and antique cars.

OK, I've registered and posted. Let's hope the numbers of Browncoats joining their site has an influence. _________________ Hell, I've been to the edge. |

Well that's my hope but thus far the response on many Firefly/Serenity boards has been lack-luster to say the least. Makes me wonder if anyone really cares at this point or if they have all just given up the cause.
You guys "Ningjingde ren" and "Melensdad" are the only ones I've ever seen there. _________________ We gotta go to the crappy town where I'm a hero!

That's a bummer lead.b but even if your unlucky and don't get the channel or an HD TV, joining the boards and posting there (IMO anyway) is important to show UNI that the interest and fans are still out here and wanting more.
They can't see us out here in the black. They aren't going to come look for us, they'ed have to search the whole dang interweb which ain't practical for them. No we've got to go and break atmo there and show'em that we as a community are still here and we've gotten bigger!
They've made a place for us to bunk, so now it's up to us to use it. I'm not saying we leave behind our favorite boards but we do need to crash the shindig they've set up for us so they know we are out here. That's my thinkin' anyways. _________________ We gotta go to the crappy town where I'm a hero!

Sure, I don't have HD etc etc yet, but I'm about to retool and if there's sufficient motive to spend the extra cash (like, knowing I'd be able to watch the BDS) it would help me to know what equipment I need to get. But the point is to let Universal know we are here and interested, even if we are as yet only potential customers. _________________ Hell, I've been to the edge. |

Well you've actually asked the right person amigo as I am an Audiovisual Technician by trade.
What you'll need:
1. An HD TV - This is good to buy first because you can use it for standard definition television while you are waiting to upgrade your service. There are many different kinds of HD TVs and most of the time your choices are limited by budget.
If you want something that's affordable with a large viewing area then HD Projection Screen TVs are what you are looking to get. The newer versions have a good picture when viewed straight on but if you have to sit at an angle there can be some glare or distortion issues but despite their size they are usually reasonable light to move around once out of the awkward box. (This is the sort of TV I own because I have a very long and narrow living room and because I didn't have a ton of money to spend on a TV. I got an 54" RCA projection screen TV for about $500 because it was a Black Friday sale last year.)
Next in line will usually be your HD LCD and/or DLP display panels. Slimmer and usually smaller (approx range 20 to 42 inches some will can be larger and smaller) these tend to be the next best option if you don't want, can't fit, or desire a better quality HD television. The larger it is the more expensive it's going to be. The quality upgrade from this sort of TV generally comes in the form of picture contrast. Projection screens in general have poorer contrast than LCD and/or DLP displays. These cost more money but can be worth it in the right space. Very large versions of these TVs tend to be exorbitantly expensive.
Plasma HD TVs - Plasma in short is the high end version. The price has dropped on a lot of plasma TVs so they are worth checking out if your looking at the LCD/DLP TVs. Plasma TVs will generally have the best contract ratio and over all picture quality of the three but may be more expensive.
2. Once you've got you TV picked out you're going to need HD service in order to fully utilize it's capabilities. Just owing and HD TV doesn't mean you are looking at HD. Without HD service you are really just looking at standard TV (blah!) on a really nice TV. It's equivalent to driving an NASCAR car with a regulator on it so you can still only top out at 65 mph. What's the point?
What to do next:
Call your cable or satellite TV provider and tell them you want HD service. In most places this is a nominal fee compared to what you are probably already paying for your service. (I think it was $5 more a month for me to upgrade.)
3. Make sure your now super Shiny HD TV and HD service are hooked up right. Yes, I know it sounds stupid but you can't always trust the cable/satellite guy to do it right. That was my experience anyway (my cable provider shall remain nameless to protect the stupid).
What to look for or do yourself:
There are a few ways to make sure you are getting your full HD experience. The video cable being the first thing to check. There are 3 different cable that can be used to carry an HD signal from your cable or satellite box to you HD TV - Component, DVI, and HDMI (there may be a few others weird things out there but these are the most common). Any one of them will do the trick. If you tech didn't use any of these cables your most likely not looking at HD TV and that tech was a gorram idiot. Your Sat or Cable box should come with 1 or more of these 3 kinds of cables (not usually with the TV though). Most of these video cables, and the places they should be connected are clearly marked. After you have connected the correct cables to the correct places you'll need to be sure your on the right input of the TV. (Cycle through all your inputs either with your TV remote control or the input button usually located on the front or side of most TVs) Usually there is a little On Screen Display that will tell you what input you currently have selected.
4. Audio! - Sure the video looks great but without audio you're going nowhere. How can you sing along to the theme song if you can't hear it? You'll have to check and make sure you have your audio cable hooked up correctly but it's usually not hard. If you have a high end theater system then the audio may run through that (Shiny... Turn it up!) and not the TV speakers. [NOTE: Some HD panels don't come with speakers! Make sure you read everything about the TV or panel you buy.]
5. Check and see if Uni-HD is provided in your service area. (ask you cable or satellite provider - demand it if they don't carry it!)
6. Watch Firefly and have a Shiny good time!
I think that's everything. Ask me if you have more questions. I'm always happy to help out a fellow Browncoat![/u] _________________ We gotta go to the crappy town where I'm a hero!

Thanks, Cordrone, that's really helpful. It'll be a couple of months before I move into my new place, but getting something like that set up there will be a priority. _________________ Hell, I've been to the edge. |
