|
|
Now that Alan Tudyk has confirmed that, so far as he knows (and he heard it from Nathan), we've got Universal's attention, maybe it's time for a wavecard campaign?
A wavecard - that's ... er ... well OK, it's just a postcard really, but more than that it's officially licensed Serenity merchandise, thanks to the good Browncoats at QMx.
See, what I'm thinking is, we've discussed in the past whether we should be sending "stuff" to Universal, following on from the Jericho nuts campaign. It was generally considered that sending granola bars or whatever really wouldn't be appropriate, and we could end up doing more harm than good. But nothing beats a good letter writing campaign. And postcards are better than letters because the execs don't even have to open the envelope. And these are Serenity postcards!
I've been unhappy for a while now that outside the US, all that the rest of us can do is sit on our bums* and hope that the good folk in the US are buying enough BDCEs. There needs to be something the rest of us can do. This could be it.
The way I see it is, if we let our "object" be a QMx wavecard, then we kill many birds with one stone. First off, we'd be buying a licensed product, which puts money into Universal's hands. (And QMx's, but who's going to complain about that?). Secondly, Universal will actually see that, when those postcards arrive in their offices. Thirdly - it's a letter, with words on it - your words - words which would allow you/us to tell Universal just how much it would mean to us for them to make the sequel. And as noted at the top of this post, the timing is right.
Just flying this suggestion across the forum folks. But if y'all like it, we could make it a real campaign. What's the consensus on this forum?

Hmm. That's less support than I'd hoped for.
I know that there's a "save the Dresden files" campaign (largely promoted by Slice of Sci-Fi) encouraging people to send drumsticks to some network or other. I think that tactic is old, after Jericho, but we'll see.
But back to Serenity II. The proposal is a good old fashioned letter writing campaign, but using Serenity postcards so that Universal know we're buying the licensed products. We've got their attention. Let's keep it.
If there's enough support for the idea, we can plug it on the Signal, and get Firefly Talk involved, and all sorts. If not, the idea will quietly die. Thoughts? _________________

The Bedlam Bards are behind this 100%!
We're not behind it just because we want our big damn trilogy. We're not behind it just because we want to believe. We're not behind it just because we want more material to write songs about.
We're behind it because we want bitch-slap all the trolls who said it would never happen!
What's the URL to order those wavecards?

Okay, this might be a stupid question, but what's that address to send them to at Universal? I figure it's good to have all the info in one place!

Ah - this is where my plan falls the the ground! I'm not completely sure.
However, the last letter writing campaign, which was about a year ago now, suggested this address:
Universal Pictures
100 Universal City Plaza
Universal City, CA 91608
Edit - Contact names removed, because they were wrong
I have absolutely no idea whether the contact people are still current. Even if that was right a year ago, either or both of those people could have left. It would be wise to look into that and get it confirmed before we start sending anything to potentially the wrong place.
Here's what I know for sure. Universal's contact info webpage is:
http://www.universalstudios.com/homepage/html/contact_us/contact_links.html
Unfortunately, that doesn't help. I'm sure the actual postal address above is correct, it's just the contact people I'm not sure about. I hope someone can confirm or deny. _________________

well, I have sent two small letters out already. (Don't know when they will get there since Royal Mail is still backed up)
I didn't have the postcards, and I didn't want to write a long letter, so I sent acetate sheets, one with the blue sun logo and the other with a Serenity outline 'water marked' on them and then my 'Thanks but I want more' message written over the top. They looked real shiny! I even sent them in black envelopes. Wish I had taken pics.
Anyway, for my next project, I'm gonna send them an origami crane decorated in serenity paper. But that's gonna be in a couple of weeks. I need to practice making cranes. Mine don't really stay together at the moment.
And after that, I have some rice paper in a roll. I thought I would send them a letter, but in a scroll, decorated in Chinese pictures with a firefly theme.
So, over the next few weeks, I'm gonna be busy I think

I think this is a great idea. It's past time to have a letter writing campaign--If I'm correct, the last one was at the first anniversary of Serenity on the big screen.
I'm also all about the idea that we use those shiny QMX postcards to do it. Kate's reasoning is sound, too--Universal gets money from licensing the product, and it's something that is easiser than a letter to send, and very, very distinctive.

This is a great idea on so many levels. Using the beautiful Wavecards will communicate that fans believe in Firefly/Serenity by financially supporting Universal, and simultaneously sends a rather large visual cue. We helped bring about the movie Serenity. In the grand scheme of things, campaigning for Serenity II seems like a lot less work than Serenity I We can do it, we just need to make the commitment and have our voices heard - again.

Wowsers! (I got here linked from Cedric's livejournal.)
Brian or Jeremy, do you think you might be willing to post a news item about this on the main page of SerenityMovie.net? The reason is that I'd like a way to easily announce this *verbally*.
vixy & Tony will be performing this weekend at VCon in Vancouver, with both a concert slot and a Joss Whedonverse sing-along scheduled, and then the following weekend we'll be at the Ohio Valley Filk Festival in Columbus, where there'll also be plenty of Browncoat filkers, and after THAT there'll be Orycon in Portland. My point is, I'd like to be able to announce this news and campaign at each of our concert gigs and anywhere else I can-- but it's kind of hard to say "http://fireflydvd.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=3794" out loud at a concert, and even harder to expect your audience to remember it!
A news item on the main page, with links to both this thread and where to buy the wavecards, would make it just that much easier to spread the word!
...pretty please?

I'm not sure who's flying this thing--by which I mean the wavecard campaign. It was Companion Kate's idea. I don't think that there are legal toes that you could step on, Eric, with nationwide PR campaign, but I'm not a lawyer. I'd say do whatever you think is best. _________________ On the Drift: Music Inspired by Firefly and Serenity

The response on this forum has been strong enough to push it into reality. So, we will be promoting it on the Signal, and Firefly Talk will be doing the same on their podcast, and so really it's just about spreading the word now.

All publicity is good publicity, so go for it. However, please avoid the word "nationwide" in your PR. This is a PLANETwide campaign. It is absolutely not, not, not, not, not limited to the US, or whatever corner of the world you may have been thinking of there. _________________

Well typically as per cost or expense, and as far as connections here @ my firm the US market is the only conceivable market for me to do. I agree this is a Planetwide issue However unfortunatly Im only capable of "Nationwide" with my contacts. Wish i had more than that though I do believe any PR will help. With that said I'll be puttin this I3ITCH in flight asap! |

Someone on my LJ friends list is saying this has been debunked. Does anyone have an actual source for Tudyk or Whedon being quoted? She says: "Alan and Joss have both said that what he was saying wasn't 'oh, they're considering a sequel', it was 'oh, they're considering another special edition'."
Does anyone have a URL? I don't know where to begin to do research on this.. |

This is not the right thread for that question. However, in summary: If you were dumb enough to believe that a sequel has already been greenlit, then yes, the notion has been debunked. However, as I have continually pointed out, that's not what Alan said. Really, all he actually said was what we already know - that Universal are thinking about it. The last authoritative quote was from Joss, who said that hopes for a sequel rest with the Collector's Edition DVD
Head over to this thread to continue that topic.
Now that we've got Universal's attention, we need to keep it, and to let them know that we will stand fully behind their decision to make a sequel, in whatever form they choose.
And that's why we should send them wavecards. _________________

Y'know, even if Tudyk hadn't said a word about rumblings at Universal, this would still be a great time for a massive wave card campaign, big enough to really get folks' attention at Universal.
We have done the impossible, and that makes us mighty!

Hi there!
Any advice on what to write on the wave cards? I know, I know it is a fairly stupid question, but I have never done this before and English is my second language, I don't want to mess it up, being French I tend to be straight to the point... I would love some pointer on what people tend to write.. othertwise I will do my FRench thing, writing from the heart and being straight to the point... help!? _________________ Oh god! Okay, so, I've been lurking quietly in the background, biting my tongue. But I didn't want to influence your decision on what to do here one way or another, and because QMx has some financial interest in the sales of said Wavecards, I figured I should do that thing I so rarely seem to be able to do – keep my mouth shut
But, now that it seems y'all came to this outcome without any undue influence on our part, all I can say is – YEAH! This is *exactly* how we hoped the Wavecards would be put to use when we decided to do them: as a guerrilla marketing tool. But, if these could help in some small way to make a sequel happen, that would beyond our wildest dreams.
We are so thrilled that the Browncoat community has decided to use our humble cards as the vessel of this critical message, we've decided to reduce the price of the Wavecards by $5 a set until the campaign is complete, so as to make it just a little bit more affordable for folks who want to use these to do good works. You can go right now, this minute, to our listing on Amazon.
The price should also change on our website by tomorrow morning.
Thanks again. And let's see if we can make that sequel happen! _________________ QMx Andy

Hey, Leaf,
Writing from your heart and getting right to the point are always good things. Your posts, by the way, sound just as good as many I've seen from native speakers.
If you want a suggestion, just write this:
"I'm sending this note to say that I and many of my friends would love to go to the theater over and over to see a Serenity sequel, and then we'd buy DVDs of it to give away for Christmas. Please make a Serenity sequel!" _________________ On the Drift: Music Inspired by Firefly and Serenity
