The end of Angel was indeed brilliant. But I dispute the claim that it was the best closing episode of a series ever.
I would like to suggest, as possible true contenders to that claim, the following:
(1) Blackadder Goes Forth
(2) Blake's 7
Any others? (And let's try not to spoil our fave series for those who haven't seen them yet).

I'll second Blake's 7 but add The last Episode of Season 4 of Babylon 5...which was SUPPOSED to be the final episode until they got a last-minute reprieve and were able to do a season 5.
And while I am on that subject...Last episode of Season 5 of Buffy the Vampire Slayer as well (Last Season on the WB)

I believe you are wrong about Babylon 5. "Sleeping in Light" was always intended to be the final episode. From Wikipedia:

Perhaps, but doesn't the existence of seasons 6 and 7 demote "The Gift" from a true ending to a mere season cliffhanger? (For that matter, doesn't the existence of Angel season 6 comic books demote "Not Fade Away" from a true ending to a mere season cliffhanger?)

At the time, it felt like a ending. Whatever transformations it has gone through since don't change how I felt when I watched it as it was aired.

Buffy S5 ending WAS written as a season ending (when they thought they weren't getting picked up again).
A transition to a new medium shouldn't matter - it is a TV series finale.

I suspect you wrote "season" but meant "series" there. 
OK. Well then we can count any episode which was written as a series ending, even if the series got resurrected later on. So Buffy S5 counts, as does Angel S5.
That said, I still think Blackadder Goes Forth and Blake's 7 top the scale, even with that competition.

I'm gonna have to say most season endings annoy me (even Chosen, which most Buffy fans love).
There just isn't enough time in an hour (or two hour if they do a two part thing) to sum up a really good show and say "the end".

I, like many other Yankees (to distinguish us from our Canadian and Mexican continentalites) watched the season closer of Cheers - which was okay, and M.A.S.H. which was brilliant.
I do think that Blake's 7 (which I HAVE seen and heartily recommend) was nothing short of brilliant. Joss has acknowledged the influence that B7 had on Firefly and if we had gotten it, I suspect that (and no spoilers here folks) the end of Firefly had they been able to close it out proper might have been somewhat similar.

Wow, that's a radical idea. On reflection I'd expect Firefly would have turned out differently from B7 --- though I can't explain why without giving away B7 spoilers!
