I didn't have room on the MP3 player, so I saved y'all onto a thumbdrive and listened on the laptop. Can't stop the Signal! Laughing

I'm not sure why, but I enjoyed this episode more than the past few. Maybe it was all of the shiny segments, or all of the shiny crew members whose voices graced this one...HA, I know, it was the most recent with everyone home for a change! You can hear the relaxation, and a different kind of enthusiasm in everyone's voices.

BTW, "Londinium" is canon in the series and the visual companions. That QMx pulled a gaffer makes all of those posters more valuable! All that cashy money, too!

I really enjoy the "Tale of the 'Verse" segment, and the discussion of the Kestrel was da bian-hua!

Nick's "Thoughts From the Rim" was provocative and very well done. I've been a fan since the original airing of "Train Job", and I have gone thru cycles myself concerning my own enthusiasm. Yet, whenever I hear that the Browncoat community needs help, I do what I can to assist and get almost manic when doing so. I tried to get a small phantom screening going in Colorado Springs while the MileHigh BCoats were doing their CSTS up in them parts, but I was only in town for 5 days, and couldn't quite pull it off. I did give my standard copy of the BDM to a friend, so that they could watch it at their leisure, seeing as I had the BDMCE too. I hope that it buds a new growth of Browncoats in CO. Perhaps this segment requires a bit more discussion in the forum? Nick?

Keep your eyes peeled for 19-Oct-2008, when the PCPCAwards announce the slates of finalists. You'll have 72 hours between the unveiling and the voting to gather the forces. Guess what? That means that you'll be able to put an announcement in the next Signal podcast, the day before the voting starts, shiny! Be prepared! Smile

Most especially, "Londinium" is correct because Joss said so. He made an explict point of correcting QMx's mistake, which is how we know.

The incorrect spelling occurs (1) in the shooting script for Serenity (Firefly's pilot episode), and (2) in the RPG book.

"Aluminium" is of course also spelt with two i's in the UK Smile

Just had to share how much I really enjoy the Verse Speculation segments. Those just get better and better every episode. Keep up the great work!

Heh. Yup, we spell it differently to the US, as well as pronounce it right <ducks>.

Damn shiny show. Thanks for the nice comments. If we could figure out what makes the very best shows, we'd do it all the time Smile
Just seemed to gell very nicely.

Dunno, I was first in with comments, and I was 'specially liss'nin foh that plea for readers and editors. Laughing Being involved, however little it may be, gives a bit more than average incentive. Wink Of course, I get sad seeing Lushy all by herself in the Show Notes topics...

A suggestion that may be way off the mark, but, how about changing your musical selections to include merges between Edmondson and Newman? FFT, albeit is irregular, has a very shiny opening sequence with a piece (not sure which one) from the BDS fading into one from the BDM, and more very shiny passages for their segments. Perhaps blend some of the shiny filk that has been recorded with score from either BDS and BDM? Do same with the scores of DTI, BDS and BDM? Once done, they could remain the signatures for the Signal.

Aside from that, mix up the segments from month to month and see the responses it provokes. Find a combo that really draws them.

One more note, not for this or any past season, but perhaps for next? Put start times of each segment into the program by the name of the segment? It's not that important, but it would help for getting to the particular piece that was talked about in the program for research. I can do some of it for y'all, as I will be doing some research in support of the topic that MrDave and I are pursuing. Wink

And whilst I'm thinking on it, is the "Tale of the 'Verse" based in canon? Really shiny segment, especially for those "inquiring minds"... Laughing

Well, on the theme front, we have had a different openining theme every season so far, but changing it mid season is not sensible. It needs to establish the show (and in the last couple of seasons, the whole theme of teh season) in listeners minds. Plus would be a shedload of work for no obvious gain.

We will not be putting in timings for segments in the show notes.

The show often has to be shuffled around at the last minute before publication to fit stuff in and maybe drop some stuff to avoid overrun (and saved for the next show) The show notes are re-arranged to reflect that and I think that is sufficient. Having to go in to the final mixdown and work out each segment's start time would be a lot of extra work that simply isn't required for most folks and as crew, once it's done, we have rarely a need for index marks in what's been published.
The only time we do anything like that is with "please fast forward 10 minutes" type spoiler warnings.

However, if you feel the need, go right ahead Smile

Tale of the Verse. No, it's not canon...as such. it's never been in or likely to be in a Firefly sequel DVD, comic or a BDM II. But neither is it pure fanfic. I have to be careful here. The "factual" basis for info used in the segment was not penned by Joss, put it that way.

So do we. Cool

We've been asked this before, lots, but I guess you weren't to know that coz it's not in the FAQ. I think I'll have to pull my finger out and update the FAQ! Anyway - the answer is: Sorry, it's too much work.

ironbandit wrote:

Ask that question again in a few months' time. Wink

That you do, I just thought that giving the segments new sequences or accompaniment could freshen them up. Sir Kevin's news for example, a phrase from "In My Sky" might brighten it. The "Tale of the 'Verse" has a very shiny musical verse with it.

H'okay, then how about someone volunteer to do it after the program is 'casted, and add it to the show notes BEFORE they get posted? Or, put the timing information into a post for the topic that is opened for each show? Wei, I could do that myself while listening, get the info to Lushy for inclusion in her opening post to the topic. That can be done ANYTIME after the show has been 'casted, I could go back now and do it for them all, back to the very first one with Les by himself. The info could be added with a simple edit of the post, and a paste of the info into it. 'Mind, I'd likely work backwards from the current ep.

Wow! If you want to take on that responsibility, we are *not* going to complain!

It might take a few days of internal discussion to figure out how to integrate this into the show notes, but rest assured, your offer won't be ignored.

It's summat ya gotta do every cuppla weeks, wussa big deal? Wink Yeh, I might be at it everyday until the Holiday Special is 'cast, but so be it! I plan to take it all of the way back to Les' debut...already it set up and ready too, in fact. And, I fired a test to Lushy (Miranda) using the text that I demonstrated with previous. She'll just have to be on the lookout for a PM with the info shortly after the podcast and show notes are posted. (ARE YOU LISSNIN, LUSHY?)

As for any responsibility, hell, lissnin to the Signal I look forward to. I just need to pay closer attention now, is all. Laughing

I think that we'll leave the "canon" shownotes alone, and just include this in the forum. I take all of the subtext info out to keep it simple. And, the 2 minutes that it takes to get the text from the show notes page into a text file and chopped down like this can be right before starting the podcast on my MP3 player. Not sure what you use to build your web pages, but my method is far easier. Smile

P-by-P continues, all of the screws are out of the bottom of the laptop...now complete, and still won't boot up, so I'll be shopping for another laptop... And the beat goes on... see what is next! Very Happy

OK. That does look kinda cool.

I'll even concede that I would have found something like this handy when looking back through episodes for a particular bit! We've just always thought it would be too much extra work on what can be a very tight schedule. Might have to eat my words Smile

Nice job. Useful resource too. Having them here for now probably is easiest, but we are discussing this on the crew mailing list.

Thanks!

Nick

Once the timing is done and given to Miranda, it's y'all's (sp?) to do with what you wish. I just try to make it a little easier for y'all. Wink Oh, and Nick, it would be tough getting this in BEFORE you have the program 'casted. Once it's in the sky, it is final. It's just a matter of paying a little closer attention as you listen.

Yeh, she posted it up, and since it is the very first post for the topic, it is easily accessible. I'll have them to you back to 4-15 tonight. Gonna have to dust off some o' them as we go back farther, or is there logical point to stop? Confused

BTW, when I mentioned change of the musical sequences, it was not for this season. Sorry if I made y'all think otherwise. Confused

If'n ya do decide to shoehorn them into the show notes, I'll be sure and fill in the "Les and Kari talk about..." and provide a short synopsis from what I remove. Fit and finish is a factor when it comes to being the gorram shiniest podcast in the da bian hua 'verse! Laughing Think I'll do that anyway for Lushy. GORRAM! I guess that I won't. VERY SHINY!

I just peeked at the show notes on the website, ICYWWundrin. Wink

Timing for all episodes in Season 4 has been completed and sent off to Lushy. When she has time, she'll incorporate them into the originating posts for each of the episode threads. Very Happy

can I just say, I enjoyed this episode, but the last segmant made me sad. Due to the nature of the segment, its not surprising, but it still made me sad. Joss can be real mean sometimes, I know that it is his story, but still....

I finally got caught up with all the episodes when I listened to #18 yesterday morning.

I enjoyed the speculation segment and the Codename Kestrel piece as well.

The show closed out really strong with the Tale of the Verse, Badgers World, the Summer Glau song and the TAGS on Inara, despite the sad reveal about her.
