Been noticing many people accidentally posting as Guest. When you log in there is a box that says "Log me on automatically each visit". Click it, and it will use a cookie to always log you in. So whenever you come here, you'll already be signed in. Easy as pie. Mmm... pie...

So I expect to stop seeing people accidentally posting as Guest in the future. Wink

I'm sure that is what that feature is supposed to do, but it has not worked for me yet. I click it everytime I log on, but I have to do it all over again the next time I visit. Not sure what the problem is, since I do have my computer set to accept cookies, and so far this is the only message board that does not seem to recognize me when I load the page. Been meaning to ask Jeremy about that, and now you've given me the opportunity.

Auto log-on didn't work for me either. How do I enable cookies?

In Internet Explorer, go to the Tools menu and select Internet Options. Click on the privacy tab and make sure it's set to Medium. If that doesn't work, you can click on the advanced tab and look for anything about blocking cookies, and disable them.

Hrmm... I haven't had any problems here either. But I only have access to Macs. I'll have to set my Mac bigotry aside just long enough to test it on some PCs. But I suspect that people have their security settings too high.

I'm on a PC and it works fine.

BTW, what happened to that one topic that was moved? It says the forum does not exist! (The topic in the Anything Goes folder)

Which topic are you referring to? The only topic I've moved from the Anything Goes folder was "Question for the Admin" and it's working fine.

When I click on that topic I get this :

"Information

The topic or post you requested does not exist "

Where did you move it to, anyway?

The automatic log in function doesn't work for me, either and my privacy setting is only at medium. Sad

My settings had been at medium high, which was adequate for nearly every other site I visit to recognize my ISP address. Yesterday I changed it to medium, clicked the box when I logged on, and did not log out after reading all new messages. This morning I had to log in again.

PostPosted: Fri Apr 30, 2004 1:39 pm    Post subject: Posts not indicated as read. Reply with quote

Another problem I'm having with this forum is that I have no way of knowing what posts I have already read. Whenever I click on a thread I've already looked at that indicates more posts have been added, it takes me right to the first post and I basically have to skim the whole thread to find where I stopped reading before and hunt down the new posts. This isn't so bad now while the number of posts is still small, but later it's going to be a real pain in the neck to deal with. In fact, I'm already getting tired of doing it. Even threads that have more than one page do not indicate in any way that I have already read any of those pages, even after I have finished them all. I basically have to try and remember on each thread what I have or have not read already. I have also tried clicking on the 'mark all topics read' button before logging out to see if it would make a difference when I checked in again, but it did not. Each time I log in, there is no indication that I have read anything yet. Am I the only one having this problem? Is there something I have failed to do while logging in because I am unfamiliar with this format?Sad

I know exactly what you mean. I'm looking into a 'mod' that will turn the brown folders next to the topics into buttons that will take you straight to your unread posts. I'll try to get the mod installed in the next few days, so don't run away discouraged quite yet.

The way you know that you haven't read posts in the thread and then which posts in the thread you haven't read is that it has a yellow/orange highlight of the paper icon at the top of the thread or posts. But you have to be logged in for this to work. Wink

Wow! The little page icon at the top of each post is so small, I never even noticed it before! I think that is because the rest of the page is so busy with pictures and quotes. Thanks for the info RKLENSETH, it will really help. Very Happy

Also didnt notice the little orange doohicky. Neat!
Very Happy Gotta say, I love this board - being the techno-twit that I am, the fact that I've been able to post stuff without special instruction is wonderful - just please don't add to many great new features that make things complicated! Wink

I have not had any problem with knowing which forums, threads and posts I had not read yet, since I did notice the color on the page icons.

BUT, I have to be logged in to see that, and I STILL have to log in every single time I visit, even if it is only a short period of time between visits.

I am not going to change my privacy settings lower than Medium, and as stated earlier, even Medium High was sufficient for all the other sites I visit. For example, I visited eBay today for the first time in at least two weeks, and yet I was automatically logged in.

What's the deal?

Hrmm... I really wish I knew. In an effort to narrow down the problem, would you mind trying a different browser. Firefox should be a good test:

Many thanks,

very strange that it doesn't work for some people. I use Internet Explorer (I don't like it, but I'm too lazy to get anything else), and a PC. hmm...

BTW, that topic that was moved from the anything goes folder STILL does not exist.

And it works for me. Is that what you were referring to?

The way it works is that it stores a cookie in your temporary folders so if you don't allow cookies or delete your temporary folder etc... often then that is why you have to log back in.

Hey Jeremy!

Thanks for the tip about clicking on "View posts since last visit" to make it easier to see what's new.

A new question about that: is there some way to REMOVE my history of reading a particular topic? For example, the board thinks I might be interested in a certain topic because I happened to click on it once in the murky past. But then I realize that it's a dud and I'm not really interested in reading more about it, so I don't want to have to wade through the updates of all those dud topics, just because I clicked on it once.

Got me? Sorry if this question has been asked somewhere before.

Auto log-on doesn't work for me, and I'm on low security and allowing cookies. Probably it's because my only computer is at work, where some firewall thing is preventing it?

Actually the "View posts since last visit" button will show you all posts across all rooms, whether you've ever been their or not. I don't know of a way of narrowing it down to just the threads you are interested in, sorry. But I'll keep that in mind while I'm perusing around for phpBB mods.
